Hi Loophole,
I'm a Active member for Volunteer Marine Resque ( Jacobs Well ).
To begin with......find a VMR OR Coast Gaurd in your area.
Then pay them a visit, they will give you all the information that you require.
Don't be shy....All Volunteer Organisation's .....do welcome & help anyone that
needs assistance.
Cheers
Scott.

Just a suggestion loophole. In the emantime while you wait those 2 years to pass, get a ehad start.
Check out your local TAFE for associated courses.
They used to run coastal navigation courses, that sort of stuff.
A good source of info is the small ships manual, available at all good bookshops. heres a link to where you can buy some good books online that will help.;

and the Australian Baoting Manual by Cpat. Dick Gandy

both great reads
