I was cleaning up files on my computer, found one has not solved, and I should had post it few weeks ago.

It caught on winter whiting rig and length was approx 9cm, near scarby reef.
Anybody can identify?

I recon its a "Cooks Spotted Soldier-fish". We've caught them winter whiting fishing too.

They have a huge mouth when they open right up for such a little fish. They don't get much bigger than the one you caught...so perhaps a PB that will be hard to beat unless you start targeting them pretty hard lol ;D

(Apparently the dark blob on the tail is the conspicuous defining feature. )

Good call. Grants says grows to 100mm max. I have also caught these and they will take a bait almost as big as they are.

Either a soldier fish or a cardinal fish both are very similar and from the same family of fish.

If im not mistaken i believe thats a fine specimen af a rare ( northern yellow bellied short finned fork tailed large eyed snub nosed sav sucker ) scientific name ( iknowibullshitalot ) qiute rare in these parts ;D
