Went to the mouth of the Barron River yesterday and thought I'd try break my duck on SP's.

After about an hour and a half of nothing I thought I'd give the one lure a go that I hadn't tried in my tackle box as yet; a special I bought from my local tackle shop.

A further 45 minutes of casting and walking upstream along the bank at low tide and I got a good hit, a 40cm barracuda which decided to hammer the minnow lure and wasn't too happy about the hooks in his intended meal :)

Got nothing else for the remainder of the day but I'm slowly becoming convinced that there is something to this artificials game. Best thing was that no one else got anything of a keeper size that I saw so was pretty happy with myself; after cleaning and everything else, I still got a 35cm fillet off it.

They're not the best eating fish but a feed is a feed and an enjoyable afternoon all the same;D

Yup, it's a pesky Pike. Good work on your first fish though. There'll be plenty more fish!

Evening Yellahunter and TimD; you are right guys, it is a Pike.
the book that I have for identification lists it as one of the following names:


Snook
Pike
Sea Striped Pike
Barrcuda
Sennit
