just wondering what effect snorkels have with regard to turbo diesel engine performance eg fuel consumption, power, pick up or is it just for water crossings cheers Yamp

i found no difference with power or economy, great option for water and dust

I put one on my 2002 3 litre turbo diesel and found an improvement in power

There should be an increase in power while underway (ram air effect). Plus you get a cool intake noise(fully sic)

Used to have one on my old 2.2l hilux diesel and if it was disconnected you could feel the decrease in power(when you have no power to start with its easy to notice a difference)

In theory there should be an increase of power.
The cooler the air the better the fuel will mix with it ie the better the bang.
So if you get air from the outside instead of under the bonnet it should be cooler and making the fuel mix with it better.

An example of this is drag racers like running at night as the air is cooler so their engine produce more horsepower.

The other advantage of a snoekel is having the air intake higher reduces the amount of dust sucked into the filter. Your engine runs better and your filter lasts longer.

Makes a bigger difference with big cube engines 4 litres and on. Definately worth it, but match it with a good air filter to keep the most air passing through (oil elements are great for any water getting past your snorkle). Also like honky dory said (engines all love cooler air) especially hot running turbo ones. But the bad side is it doesnt cool the air as much when your going slow. :(.

I just fitted a Safari to my 2.8TD GQ and I noticed a difference right away. With the original air filter in the 2.8 it was being starved of air, now she has a little more power, not sure of consumption yet, havent done a big trip to test that out.
