Came across a photo of an old Dam 3001 spin reel I used to have.
About circa 1980. Probably the best spin reel I ever had, but I gave it to my
brother, who uses it for barra. It has a gear ratio of about 3.5:1 and was a bit slow for what I use spinners for. It`s got one big drag washer nearly the diameter of the spool, and also has a 3 position bail arm tensioner.
The one thing that was deficient on it was the line roller, which was a bit small and wasn`t always rolling. It also has a very strong worm type main gear,
similar to my old Abu cardinal55.
Ahh, the memories. Hope this is of interest to some.
Sorry about the quality of the pic.
cheers, Reggy

The old Dam's,Mitchell's and Penn Spinfisher's were some of the toughest reels ever made. They built everything to last in those days.Love to see what a well used Saltiga or Stella would look like in 30 years time.Landfill I think.;D ;D

Don't think there'll be as many fish, but I know they won't be caught on any of the disposable rubbish made today.:D

I wouldn`t be too harsh on some of the top end gear made today.
I don`t know much about the spin reels, but I can see the latest Calcuttas and Saltigas being around for many years.
I was just reading in the classifieds where someone said that a 1975 Abu 8600 has never been equaled for strength, casting, quality and longevity.
I`ll agree to the quality and longevity, but there are reels now with much stronger frames, much better drags and that will cast better.
I love some of the old reels, and regret selling some, but progress has been made.
Have a look at Abu`s own Morrum.
