I went south this morning again in search of Tailor – I know, I know - Narrowneck is the place but shoulder to shoulder bait fishing is not my thing. So I decided that the mouth of the Tweed with some Poppers at dawn might be a good option.
I arrived about 6.00 am and walked out to the end of the rockwall. A school of dolphins, about twelve in total - swam out of the river mouth as I arrived and then put on a great surfing display in the decent swell.
I put on a 30 gram Roosta Popper in the red and white colours and hurled it out. From the first cast there was plenty of action with a couple of swirls and hits. On the third cast I was onto a good fish. I have been on to decent fish here before but I have never yet managed to get one up the rocks. This time I had 8lb fireline and 20lb leader but it was still touch and go as he tried to get down under the base of the rock wall. I eventually got him up and I ended up with a 1.3 kg Trevally under my foot. Next cast I lost the Roosta to the rocks and then re-rigged with a diving minnow from the bargain basement bin. On about the third retrieve it got hit hard by another slightly smaller Trev that was also landed safely.
I carried on catching them on every kind of Popper / minnow. In about half an hour I had nailed about 7 or 8 but they were getting progressively smaller so I was throwing them back. By about 7.30 am things had gone quiet.
I switched to the plastics rod and put on a turtleback worm to see what else might be down there. After a few retrieves I was onto something. I turned out to be the Trevs again – so they were on the bottom now. I got a few more small ones on the plastics before they just stopped. I switched to lighter gear and wandered along the rocks looking for some Bream for a couple of hours. There were plenty around but I could only persuade about 3 or 4 to take the plastics and they were all just borderline size so they went back. About 11.00 am I headed home.
Still no Tailor but who cares.
