What do you mean by 'pe braid'? A brand or a material? As far as I know all braids are made from PE (polyethylene) aka Spectra and Dyneema.

Dyneema,Spectra,PE,call it what you will is all the same product sharing the same properties developed in slightly different ways to avoid breaching an existing patent.Where the big difference lies is what they do with it to make what we use.The two basic forms are Heat Fused and Woven, the former leaves a product like fireline the later leaves the more pliable 'true braids'.Difference in the woven product can then be broken down into how many strands are woven, generaly the more strands the better the quality, generaly 4 strands are used with the better quality companies useing 8,12 or I think now even a 16 strand is available.

I think PE braids have a number refering to the actual diameter of the braid, some offer a lb or kg rating aswell but when you see something like PE4, the 4 represents the diameter. I thought in most cases 1 is pretty close to 10lb, 2 is pretty close to 20lb and so on but sometimes it can be a bit different, jigman X8 for example in PE4 is rated at 62lb, not 40lb. but then there may be another PE4 braid that is rated different but it will be the same or very similar diameter, being PE4.

I think thats what PE#'s represent but if anyone knows the exact reason and could fill us in, that would be good. Hope i helped.

As Timmy 666 has said the PE stands for Pollyethelyne and as you have said the number refers to a standard diameter which will cover lines of different breaking strains,in the case of the Jigman x 8 the '8' refers to the number of main strands used in the weave.

There is one brand of PE braid which is available for the electric reels that the PE no stands for its rating eg PE #8 = PE 80lb....PE#10 = Pe 100 lb ect...I am pretty sure this brand is sold by Solas Prop...in QLD...
