a quick question

not sure if this would be more suited for the flyfishing area, but I have a 9.5 foot aftma9 fly rod, but no real, and this may sound like a daft question, but would it be possible to team it with a small spinning reel and use it like a chopped down lure rod, or do you think the casting action would be off?

I'm not up on fly gear but all the rods I've seen have the mount right on the bottom of the butt,if this is the case in your situation it will make it very awkward to cast, added to this the action of the blank would probably be very soft making it an added hassel during casting.

i fished with a set up like this for a few years chasing bream at night around sydney . 6lb line, tiny or no sinkers and it was devestating on bream .you can cast unwaited baits good distances and the bream seem to not feel the rod .!!!! ill give up a trade secret ----- 1 pin a live nipper through the tail 2 cast out 3 if your using a sinker wind in till you feel the weight of the sinker 4 let out a foot or 2 of line [ so its slack ] 5 put a bell on the rod tip 6 put rod in specialy made rod holder 7 stand back and have a beer . the first bite you get will be the bream [ hopefully ] taking the head of the nipper , so the bell will ring , walk over take the bell off pick up the rod and wait the bream WILL return and take the tail but now you can set the hook . with the fly rod tip being so light the bream dosnt feel it . you can cast a spinning reel on a fly rod it just a bit arkward but you get use to it .it did think of attaching a small peice of pvc tubing to the but end of the rod to make it more conventional but i never bothered

cheers for that craig mate, I will give it a go next time on my river, when the levels drop again, had nothing but torrential rain for 2 months, and it is meant to be summer, lol

G'day Dave,

You can certainly team up your fly rod with a spinning reel and it will be quite a sensitive setup. Usually it is a 7'6" to 8' flyrod that is used due to the amount of work your wrist needs to do to flick the bait. A 9wt rod would take a substantial casting weight to load it up to be effective tho.

There is a guy who wrote a book on nymph fishing and he advocates the use of a small spinning reel with 2 or 4lb line teamed up with a 7'6" 3wt flyrod. If you would like to have a read shoot me a pm with an email addy and i will send it over.

a 9 wt rod is lite- medium in fresh water so i would be using 6 lb line
the rod holder i used was a homemade job . i used a 250mm length of 25 mm pvc tube atached a spike and cut a groove 10 or 12mm wide and 180 -200 mm long so the reel section can slide down the pipe and be securly held . it worked so well my dad made me one out of stainless steel and it still looks new .

thanks craig mate, we got lucky in that our town seemed to miss themmost of the flooding, my house is on the bans of a stram, and that burst it's banks, but flooded the otherside as we are quite high up luckilly, some place were under 2-3 metres of water, it was insane, and in some towns there were idiots vandalising freshwater tanks so no one got anything to drin






and I will give that home made rod holder a go mate,
