Hey fellow fisho's Can sombody help me out on the ever increasing amounts of fancy pants fishing line now available. A trip to the local fishing store reveal's all sorts of line to use now, all sorts of colours, types, names and whats this braided stuff I see. Because im a novice land based fisho ive been using this jarvis walker stuff and buy it in the bulk reel's which to me are very cheap, Im buying the line that is the same colour as the sea water in the surfers sea-way/ broad water but have seen all this bright flouro line, is this line better, being land based im using anything from 10Lb to 15/20 Lb, is the more expensive line at the same strength better, so far the jarvis walker stuff has pulled in tailor, flattie's,big bream and even decent rays, should I spend more on expensive line??

G'Day Bretty, Mate it seems that what u are using is working for you, (Don't fix something that aint broke), There is all sorts of Braid on the market at present and it is expensive, if your getting results stick with what you are doing, Cheers Whitto

Quite simply, "you get what you pay for" although there is some expensive stuff that's absolutely shocking.
Braid is a lot thinner, lb for lb than mono and you can therefore use less weight and cast smaller lures further. It also has the ability to register bites more effectively as there is little if no stretch in it.
Brightly coloured line is used mainly in trolling so that it is easier to see where your lures are sitting but it is generally considered to be a put off in general fishing, as a recent thread on this site has proven.
It is also hard to gauge just how good mono is unless you pay specific attention to the sales blurb or your own experience, the latter being the better. ::) If you're using Jarvis Walker "run of the mill" stuff, then it is likely thicker than say, Platypus Platinum so you will need more weight.
Some monos are more abrasion resistant and stand up better to reef fishing than others and some have low memory whereas others have an elephant's memory and take on the shape of your spool.
Line can be specific to location, species, and even temperature. Some monos are limp and some are stiff, particularly in cold weather. Some have better UV resistance, and some reflect light whilst others absorb it. Braid generally breaks at a higher strength than indicated but can pull the hooks if you don't use a mono leader to absorb the shock and mono sometimes gives up the ghost for no apparent reason other than old age............There's a zillion reasons when it comes down to choosing line and these are just a few.
Pull your Jarvis Walker line off the reel and the odds are, it will hang in coils and not straight.
All that said, a piece of cotton or string will catch when the time and the fish are right, but the best line in the right hands, will come up trumps every time.
You can skimp on rods, and you can skimp on reels, but you should never skimp on hooks, line and bait.

X-Files fans. Create the effect of being abducted by aliens by drinking two bottles of vodka. You'll invariably wake up in a strangeplace the following morning, having had your memory mysteriously "erased."

Thanks whitto, that's about what im looking for, wasnt too sure if I was wasting my time with the cheap stuff but your right, It is working and very well, As I said im a land based fisho working the shore's of the gold coast broadwater and sea-way as this is the closest I can get to clean deep water from where I live in the beenleigh area (without travelling too far) so my main targets are Tailor,Bream and flatties, the bloody rays pop thier ugly heads up every now and again but ive noticed they have been quiet now its colder.
Cheers Whitto!

Wow Kev!!! Thanks for that indepth reply on the ins and outs of the line. Yes your right, I have pulled off this cheap mono stuff before and yes it does curl up as you say, As ive got lots of it left i'll use it all up before I spend up on any new stuff.
I still have to agree with whitto in saying if aint broke dont try and fix it but you have explained it all so well one would be silly not to listen.
Cheers Kev..... Yes , lots of vodka will erase ones memory it also seems to make us talk about fish we have never caught and women we have never met!!
