G'day
Do a search on bm, nick has given some excellent information recently on this subject.
The japanese made mercs ae tohatsu, and the 4stroke nayural aspirated mercs are yamaha, they've had a technological agreement for a few years, whilst mercury were developing verado.
Suzuki and johnson 4strokes are the same aswell.

From what Blackened said it sounds like Mercury were a bit lazy whilst they were working on the verados so they got some other company to make there motor and slap on a mercury cowling;)
ive had 2 mercs and a mariner i was very happy with them all. but personelly i would like it if all the companies just made their own motors.
thats my opinion.
cheers Peter
My 2005 50 ELPTO Mariner is made in Fon Du lac U.S.A. Although, Im sure that Yamahahaha do a fine job making OB's too. as there are plenty around.
Before too long there will be Chinese OB's and as long as the warranty is good (Merc give you 3 years) and the price is right, they will sell.

G'day
I'm not sure about mrcury being lazy, more like they were covering a base of the market whilst they did r and d on their own version. the verado is new technology in the marine envoronment.
I'd rather do that then place myself out of the 4stroke market completely whilst developing new engines.
