G'day All,

I came across this chart which will be useful for anybody wanting to identify the year model of a Johnson / Evinrude (OMC) motor.

Admittedly, I havent checked it on an OMC motor for accuracy, so some feedback will be good.

Ok, the chart is:

I N T R O D U C E S
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0

If you take the last two letters in the model number off your motor and match them to this chart, it will give you the year model.

Example - J150TLER

The last two letters are E and R.

Match them to the chart and you get E=9 and R=4.
Therefore the model is 1994.

I was also led to believe that many OMC motors had the year model as part of the serial number - ie J150TLER94 ?

Cheers

Pete

that is the correct way to identify them, some of the Johson models had the year number in the serial number, but for some reason, not Evinrude, all the other numbers just tell you the HP, shaft length and so on.

You have to be carefull with Identifying these engines as some have a model prefix following the year model. Can confuse the situation some what ie J150TLERB

Yep correct Garry, so Pete if the model was:

J150TLERB drop the B and THEN its the last 2 digits that fit into INTRODUCES.

To break it down one step further for the punter public:

J (or E) denotes Johnson or Evinrude

150 the hp

T power tilt/trim

L long shaft (20 inch)

ER as discussed, gives the year

B model sequence (means nothing to the engine owner)

Of course there are variations on this including extra long or ultra long shaft length, commercial engine designation, manual tilt, manual start and on and on it goes.

Cheers

Pete,

Doesn't work on my Evinrude as the serial number is all numbers.
