I am thinking about doing some trolling in the warmer months for tuna/mackerel in the bay and down around the Gold Coast. Have not done this style of fishing before. I have a couple of TLD’s that I am looking to spool up (15 & 20) and just wondering what brand of line the more experienced trolling members recommend. Also what pound main line. Not worried about leader material at this stage.

For trolling i use Momoi on my lighter outfits 8-15kg ( cheap when you buy it in bulk ) and stren for the heavy stuff . I have heard tiagra is good and to be honest i'm sure most lines sold from a reputable tackle shop will hold up ok .
I think if you check it often and replace every couple of years (depending how much use it gets ) all will be good .
Just match the line class to the rod your using and make sure drags are set properly . Since learning this i can't recall busting off a fish due to line failure and have caught fish 10 to 1 (bar some blue marlin that had way too much line out and busted off due to water pressure in the early attempts::) )
I fish with tiagra 16s on light tackle and they hold over 1000m of 8kg momoi , so every season or so i strip about 600 off and retie new with new (just to save money) . If i ever lose more line than that the knot will be the least of my worries:o .
Hope this helps .... Craig

I am using 15kg and 24kg Tiagra line in the orange colour at the moment and whilst I have only just started using it I am happy with it. I just went with the recommendation of my local tackle store and I think this is also the key. Just go and talk to your local tackle guys and I don't think you can go wrong with any of the latest monos designed for trolling.

Thanks for the replies guys, I might check out the Tiagra. Mate of mine also suggested Black Magic, or maxima tournament silver, so I might try a couple of brands on different reels and see how they go.

Hercules you mentioned that you've caught fish 10 to 1. Just last night I was reading a book on marlin fishing that spoke about 10 to 1 fish and 15 to 1 fish. Is this in reference to the weight of the fish in comparison to the breaking strain of the line? ie a 100kg fish caught on 10kg line?

you wont need any more than 15 kg as most monos are actually higher breaking strain than stated unless they are pretested I.E. platypus. The stren gold is good stuff but i dont rate the tiagara stuff at all, dont forget to run a ball bearing swivel as well.

Follow that and you will be fine!!;) I run 8kg momoi on all my light tackle stuff, good line at a reasonable price.

10-1 means an 80kg fish on 8 kg line so you were right!! The maximum i would use foir trolling would be 15 kg but if you want some fun use 8kg, set strike drag at 1/3 breaking strain and have fun

Ian

get your momoi on the net at wellsey's tackle, quite cheap;)

That's a shame seeing as I just brought 1000m of the stuff yesterday! What exactly don't you like about it, just out of interest?

I will run it on one reel and see how it goes. If it turns out to be crap I can always use it as backing for the reels I run braid on, so it won't go to waste. I will get a roll of momoi and try it as well on my other reels.
