View Full Version : Q for the metal slug throwers
have read in another post, some of you having better hookup rates with changing the trebles over to singles.
What type and size hook would you use for the following sized slugs?
1)20g ?
2)40g ?
3)60g ?
cheers
Ash ;)

I've put 1/0's on my 40grammers and either 4/0 or 5/0's on my 65gm Raiders.
Hooks I use are Gamakatsu O'Shaughnessy's.
Went for a spin off the beach this arvo using 65 gm Raiders with 4/0's.
No luck I'm afraid.
Cheers Jeff.

It's all about matching the hook size to the size of the fish you are chasing. If hook gapes are too small they will drop the fish through the fight. Trebles will hook more fish but have to be small to balance the slug. So if your chasing fish at a size that a treble is not suitable (small slug big fish) then swaping over to a single will give you a larger gape while still keeping the slug balanced. When i say balanced i mean too bigger hook can cause the slug to swim funny which will put off the fish. You will not however convert as many strikes to hookups using a single some people try to conteract this by putting back to back singles. Potentially you can use any straight shanked hook as a single. I personally like the gamakatsu spinner bait singles as they are strong and thin and give really good penetration into thick fleshy mouths like tuna.
