There are 2 major problems with the z-6500 dogfighter!
1 I havn,t saved enough money to buy one!
2 Finding fish tough enough to justify buying one!
If I think I,m a chance of getting onto fish that need 30kg drag and a reel that holds 400mtres of 60lb on any sort of a regular basis, I,m prepared to sell a kidney to buy one!!
cheers

I am about to buy a dogfight today, I have chosen the dogfight simply because I have never had a problem with any of my Daiwa gear. I have Certate 4000's and bought a new Certate hyper custom 4000 a short while ago. I was so impressed with it that it had to have a bigger brother for bigger fish.
I will let you know how it goes when I have taken it for a test run.
The hyper custom got a test run over the weekend on The S10 and I was more than happy with the 8 Longtail. There is a post in estuary section with the piccies.
You won't be disappointed if you save for either of these reels.

hey mate, you're talking about the top of the line threadies from both daiwa and shimano.
The stella is relatively faultless, as are the dogfights. The only thing with the dogfights are their weight.
You have probably opened a can of worms in the shimano vs daiwa debate. Its like comparing a mercedes with a bmw. Both unreal reels, neither will let you down

was asking as have herd a few rummors but not from anyone who had used or tested one. am doing a nomad charter and wanted to know if i should be doing anything to the reels im taking.
Nomad supply Stella 10000 and 20000 as part of their package, but a lot of customers take their own reels, spare spools and line as well. The guys chasing the really big GTs and Doggies will upgrade their drag washers on their Saltigas [Dogfight], most of the regulars will use Stellas and Saltigas.
Lumox, what trip are you on?

What is the advantage of those giant coffee grinders over a good quality overhead costing less than half the price?Avet,Calcutta 700.Penn Torque etc.

Specialist/heavy popper fishing is done exclusively with big threadlines because they are much easier to cast large distances very quickly. I personally, find them easier and more comfortable to go through the various motions of working large poppers and stickbaits.
Another reason is that large overheads require you to manually guide the line onto the spool - you can't afford the time or make any fumbles during popper fishing to do this - you need to be switched on fulltime.
Hope that helps.
In HD jigging the Spin reel is much easier to control and is more balanced by not having the reel on top of the rod [IMO], some people prefer the overheads but a majority use spin reels and nearly always Stella 20000s and Saltiga Expeditions, the Saltiga Dogfight and the Stella 10000 are more popping type reels with their 6:1 high speed ratio although they can be used in jigging and vise verse.;D

I have no doubt about the quality and fish fighting power of these big spinners,I saw a mate nail some respectable GTs and an angry 3 metre Whaler on a Stella 20000 up in Weipa, but they remind me of a primitive winch, and I find overheads much lighter, and on the right rod perfectly balanced. Most guys that take the time to master overheads rarely use spinners except in ultra light situations.Saying that fast casting is easier on a spinner is true in the case of overhead impaired anglers, and therin lies the attraction of these" i need a quick fix" reels. IMO.
I personally use overheads more than spinning reels in general fishing, Tekotas, Accurate 665XH, TLD 25s, TLD 2 speeds, Tynos, Tiagras and a few more for bottom fishing, trolling and game fishing, but for jigging 300-500gm jigs in 80-100m of water or long casting 150-200gm poppers and stick baits on 8ft rods with 80lb braid, give me an eggbeater any day.;D
The Accurate 665XH was my first jigging reel many years ago, until I tried a Stella, it is now my favorite reel for chasing Red Emperor.;D

I understand what you are saying but there is absolutely no place for overheads in heavy popping. Try it and it will be obvious.
As for jigging, both can be used - up to personal preference. In this area i used both threadline and overhead.

If you are going on NOMAD, don't worry about taking any gear, we abused their rods and reels to the max, no signs of breaking.
NOMAD only runs good gear, with tackle, forget the advertising material, they change ideas all the time, turn up with a credit card and use tackle on loose replace basis.
Fantastic Trip with the best crew around

We went to Marion Reef. Don’t worry about windons or buying the starter bag. Turn up with a credit card. It is hard to buy the right tackle when you don’t know what is bitting. The prices they charge for tackle are very good. They do not try to rip you off. NOMAD is 150% professional and it is up there as the best trip of a lifetime. We will be going again. Call NOMAD and talk to the crew they are only interested in giving you the best. Value for Money. Appears like a lot, but when you see the facilities and food, mate, worth every cent. If you want to call me for more info Mobile 0427 467 541 Cheers Alan

Lumox,
You definately can prepare before the trip if you want to - but you would only want to do this if you really want to start doing this fishing often. 2k for a good popping or jigging outfit is a big investment.
It's not too hard to prepare with the right tackle if you have the right information.
Please feel free to ask more questions if you want.
As Luke suggested, supply some of your own tackle if you will use it more than on that trip only, a fair bit of HD terminal tackle used in local [SEQ] Jigging can also be used in Popping.
Lumox, I'm also on a May 08 Marion Reef trip, only 326 days to go:o , but who's counting.::) ;)

LOL - nothing in SEQ will compare to the fish at Marian Reef.
HEAVY DUTY IS REALLY HEAVY.
The STICK BAITS with single 9/0 Owner rear and twin 11/0 owner jig hooks front, that is heavy duty.
Keep counting GPB, it is awesome.

What about Fraser Island Amberjacks and GTs - that's South East Queensland?
Trust me - I'm sure GPB is aware of how HEAVY, HEAVY really is!

These two 'tackle testers' were jigged off Mooloolaba, the other two were caught by Nomad off Fraser Island.;D

Alan,
The ex-unofficial GT popping record was taken at Fraser several years back - 68.5kg i think.
Many big AJs as well haunt around that area.
Here's a pic of the 68.5kg Fraser Island GT with John Olsen and Josh::)

323 days to get fit.
I was surprised how much work it was jigging and popping, then hooking up.
The skipper we had "Tim" had an estimated 110kg Doggie and his client hooked a 70kg GT. Both landed and released at Marion. When you go ask Tim about it. He is still smiling

Where was the advertising? I thought they were short DVD clips on jigging and popping being past on, which happens all the time, being helpful.:-/

Hints Tips, you should have received the latest newsletter. Marion Dory trips for 2008 are fully booked.
Tackle loss - 10 knife jigs in4 hours if the big ones are around.
They have plenty on the boat. They are into huge Soft plastics. My tackle bill for the wife and I was around $1500. That included one respool of a Torsa 20 for about $100.
Creek to Coast had some good footage on it last week. Not sure if it is available on their website.
The trip will be awesome and something only a few people in the world have experienced.
Cheers
Al
Al, what were the huge SPs they were using and what was their target species, they [Nomad] usually use SPs for reef species like trout etc.
Thanks mate

We were using large TT heads, 8oz 16oz, Plastics, well anything BIG. We had good success on BOZO Grubs, a big yellowish grub. The prices on the boat were less than retail. They buy in bulk and pass the savings on.
Species - Sailfish (50kg), Dogtooth, Trout, Trevally, Bass, Job Fish love them plus the odd shark.
My wife had more success using plastics than knife jigs.
Al
Yeh, I heard about the sail on an over sized grub, certainly pricked my ears up and the got the pulse racing;D . I have been trying to get a Billfish on a minnow or stickbait but a plastic would certainly be 'WOW':o .

We had a Small black trying to eat a stick bait off shore Townsville.
He was smashing it for a good 10 seconds, then a spaniard come along and stole it from him.
Stick baits are the number one lure on my boat. Big Spaniards love them
Al
sorry to get away from the original thread :)
No mate, same thread, I'm using a Stella, 'no problem[s]'.;)
Al, I'll start a stickbait thread. SSSHHH 20% off Rapala at BCF, got some X-WALK and SLASHBAITS [stickbaits with a tiny bib]:-X ;D .

I am also going on the may 11 marion reef trip. I can't wait every time I go into Fishhead I end up talking to Duncan for half an hour about the trip but this is probably making it worse.
Alan Tsv, thanks for your information on the cost of tackle you and your wife went through, this is the first time I've had a ruff idea of what it would cost if I took nothing up at all. I have been buying one jig or one popper or something I will need for the trip (but can still use back here) every week so that I wasn't hit with it all in one lump some but that doesn't sound too bad.
By the sounds of alot of feed back are the stickbaits probably the most commonly used lure as they are used for a wide range of species?
Hopefully going out for some popping and jigging this week (weather forbidding) out side straddy for some practice.
Hopefully will be getting Saltiga or Stella before the trip so seeing all of the pros and cons of each reel biast or not is very helpfull.

They had a host on the trip who gave an awesome massage for $50.
I needed it after 3 days.
Stickbaits were the best all round lure.
Rods and reels supplied are 1st class.
Everything is big, the lures are big, the fish are big.
