I,m relatively new to the fishing game in the Ballina area and have decided to have a go at fishing for jewies.
I can get livies fairly easily and have decided to try live baiting of the North Wall.
I have an Azagaie 13'2'' beach rod (10-15kg). Also a Daiwa Opus Bull 6000 and an Alvey 6'' Surfmaster, one with 25lb and one with 30lb.
A few weeks ago I fished the wall when the water was calm and very clear so that I could see how far I could cast (with quite a large livie) and so I could watch how the fish behaved and if it swam around much.
I,m going to try fishing when there is a bit more colour in the water and try to swim the bait in the white water just out from the wall.
My question is, if a jew takes the livie do I strike straight away or let it run and then strike? If it's a strike I might be better with the Bull whereas if I need to let the jew run I would probably be better with the Alvey.
Any help or advice would be welcome.
Cheers, Rob.

I strike mate all i do is when the jew grabs the bait is dip the rod a metre with slight weight on the fish so the fish turns with the bait and strike, works for me if you let it mouth the bait it may not like what it feels drop the bait and not come back then you will kick yourself, the way i see it is if its got the bait its got the hooks all you got to do is put them in, thats if you get a choice quite often they just hit and run.

Thanks!
So, if I follow you, I drop the rod tip and give a turn or so of the reel and strike.
Does my gear (rod, reel) sound OK.
I fished a 1.5m 70lb mono leader with 2 snelled 6/0s, one in front of the dorsal and one at the anal.

Also agree with samson on this.
Sometimes the fish will pick up the bait and run straight at you, just to make things interesting.
If I feel a bite, I hit it immediately, the quicker the better.
If I feel a 'run' I run backwards to take up the slack, then strike.
Cheers and enjoy!

Hard to go past the alvey in the situation your fishing good direct feel. I Agree with Samson and as nigelr said just for fun sometimes they'll head straight for you. The alvey allows you to pick up line and maintain direct touch with whats happening at the other end. What sort of livies are you using?

If I was fishing a large bait, specifically targeting jew, then I would always let the fish go on the first run. The jew normally grab the bait and move away for 10 -20 metres, then stop and swallow the bait. If you strike on that first run you will lose a lot of fish. Striking on the second run will ensure a hook-up on most occasions.

I'm using mullet. Have access to 'normal'' ones of 15cm or thereabouts and some 30ish cm ones that are as skinny as whiting. The latter are very hardy and swim around a lot.

I would definitely use the bigger ones, I always think the bigger the better for jew. I don't know anything about fishing walls for jew but would guess that live tailor would maybe be a better livie on the walls?????
