caught these at Burrum Hds last week. Windy and cold so I was limited to a few trips in the river. Caught these catfish along the black bank. I know they are in the family of the salmon catfish. What I want to know is whether they are blue catfish, same as in the Brisbane river, or are they the giant salmon catfish. I had a good look at Grants guide (which is not very useful in this case), and I am leaning towards the giant salmon catfish.

Would appreciate more info.

Jeremy,

As my fish ID book (Marine Fishes of the GBR and South East Asia by Gerry Allen) puts it, the giant salmon catfish has one long and two short barbells near the front of the mouth, while the other "smaller salmon catfish" as the book puts it have 3 long barbells. However, it is very difficult to determine between the species.

I'll take a stab and go that they are Giant Salmon Catfish aswell.

Without a side view I would hazard a guess that they are your common everyday blue (armour plated) catfish..not bad chewin' if you can ignore the slime when handling.
