i dare say the good old pilchard is a good all roun bait outside... big green prawns work well too we used to be able to pick em up for 11 bucks a kilo... pretty much cheaper then those lil school prawns ya get from the bait shop.. and if ya didn't catch ne fish you could always have a feeed of prawns

For outside use, mullet is very hard to beat, we also use whatever we catch at the time as well, fresh Seargent Baker is great also, or anything bloody.

I like fresh yorkie herrings and the green back herrings. I picked up 7kg of yorkies and 3kg of green in cast net and these all work great for the reef fish and mackeral. When the mackeral wont bite on herrings, a big fresh banana prawn will turn them on like starving dogs.
Otherwise, we use squid, mullet, yabbies (in the estuaries) or fillets of ribbon fish and whatever bait fish we catch.

Im a land based fisho, just hangin in the broadwater on the gold coast, Ive found the good old pillies work well but need to be kept on ice till use to prevent little picker's etc having a go. As of late ive been carving up the bonito to small chunk's and have been pulling bream like no-bodys business, Sees's most fish like the bonito but as with the pillies its best kept on ice till used, tends to mush up once thawed eh!
