I just love the way all the onlookers offered quick assistance to this poor blokes dilemma.

From Fords Website
'On-demand 4WD':o:o:o

Ford Escape's smart on-demand 4WD system is designed to work in two ways to allow for all types of conditions. During normal driving the vehicle works as a front wheel drive. But when the system detects a loss of traction, power is sent to all four wheels to maintain a surer grip on the driving surface. When the going gets really tough select the 4WD lock-up feature even while the vehicle's still moving, and you'll have the confidence to tackle particularly slippery off-road conditions.

Hows it going guys

Obviously a real smart bloke there who read the conditions real well before attempting to launch and what was he thinking trying to use that imitation 4wd.

Wonder if he let his tyres down? Probably not. Why are so many drivers reluctant to do it, just lazy I suppose.

Firstly, I noticed he was ' alone ". Even I would never attempt a lone beach launch.

Secondly, his rear wheels only were spining trying to get out ???????

Air pressure, yep good call..... obviously fully inflated.

OK, I feel for him but I do see the other side.

Amazing how he chased the jetski, then the trailer and last of all, someone finally offered assistance instead of looking on.

Does anyone know if this was in Australia ??? I kinda think it wasn't.

Phil, the front left tyre was probably spinning too.

This is the problem with soft roaders. The manufacturers advertise them as if they can go where a 'real' 4WD can (I won't go into what a real 4WD is, could upset some people LOL). Also, some of the 4WD magazines (Overlander for one)review them and it still sounds like they can go places they can't. Was looking into a car for the nightwatchman a few years ago and looked at the Honda CRV, the salesman tried to tell us that we wouldn't have any trouble on the beach cause when the front tyres started spinning the rear would engage. I asked him if he had ever driven on saoft sand, he said no... SURPRISE SURPRISE!! If the front start spinning it is already too late and all the rear will do is bog down too.

I do wonder though, how long were those people there before they helped the guy out? Maybe they had just got there and did jump straight to it.

Bloody lucky to get out of that at all I reckon. The waves washing around the car like that, its a wonder she wasn't there for good.

Sad to see that happen to anyone.
The on looker thing happens at rainbow a fare bit.

But i think the song choice was VERY appropriate

It's got me stuffed why you would launch a jet ski that way.
I would just push it off the trailer on to the sand while the car and trailer is high and dry.

the thing which amazes me is the jet ski which floats takes priority over the 4by,

Sorry I might seem a bit harsh but....what would you expect.
Retrieving a jetski (no problems with jetskis per say..just some of the brain dead idiots on them) on and extremely short trailer with a pretend 4X with no contingency plans for when everything goes all pear shaped (not if....when).
Gees, what would be wrong in floating the ski in on a wave onto the beach (they float in 3" of water don't they??And there was some waves ;D) then winching it on the trailer. You'd probably wouldn't even need to get the trailer tyres wet.

Looks like he locked the keys in as well. Did you see the back window getting bashed out??

May well have been Aussie...RH drive rust bucket (now)

As a side line...looks like a nice gutter just in front of the dilemma 8-)

I ma glad someone else also saw the back window getting smashed!

What sort of a bumb arse locks his keys in the car when he is trying to recover it.

(not defending the dude in anyway) but possibly the central locking shorted out?? Thats one of the golden rules if your doing a river crossing or any water work, is leave the windows down, its even more important if they are electric winows and central locking, gotta be able to escape quickly if and when ya need too. OR if in this fellas case get back IN quickly lol :D

yes i would say that the central locking shorted out! as with most fords if you replace a flat battery with a good one when you connect the new onethe doors will lock! have seen many keys locked in new fords with this happening!lol

When I was younger a mate and I used to live on the beaches on the weekends. To this day it never fails to amaze me how many times we have pulled people out of waves and those lagoons on straddie.

We actually missed the barge once on straddie because we had a guy in a rodeo strapped to our car so he would not fall into a lake. The old hilux we had did not have enough grunt to pull him out. Thankfully a guy in a lancruiser troopy came along with a winch and we were able to let him go.

Even when I was young, I still had enough brains to evaluate the condition of the ground before I actually got myself into to much trouble. Mind you, sometimes we chose to put ourselves into trouble (not on the beach) for the challange :)
