G'day all, havent put a report up for a while, so here goes.
Found myself moping around the house on Thursday, doing a few odd jobs that needed to be done between shifts, when i couldn't help but notice that the breeze had dropped right off and the rain abated.
Hmmmmmm, what to do.....::)
So i called up Fil (father in law) to see if he wanted to go for a quick run on the bay and see if we could find any scales. He's a dead set keen fisho, and gets very excited if i bring a few fish over or i can't fit fit them in my freezer (HA!!) but I'd taken him out a couple of times before for bugger all.:-/
Plan was to get a few whiting for livies and then anchor and burly a little spot in close where i have done alright b4.
Launched at Wello around 2pm and headed into the shallows for whiting. Buggers were quiet so i kept moving shallower to find them. Eventually found ONE small patch of ground holding them in about 4ft of water, but wouldn't you know it, they were all too big - 25 to 30cm:o . Too big for the fish in this particular spot anyway. Enough mucking about, lets go.
10 minutes later we are sounding the intended area and drop pick and start the burly trail. Whiting goes out, along with a fresh slab of grinner. I worked some soft plastics while waiting for the bigguns, and was kept busy with 30 -34cm squire depleting the squidgy stocks. This went on for about an hour an a half when i decided we'd pull in the baits and have a drift with sp's, as the bait was not even getting looked at>:( . Started the drift just over the reef in about 4m of water, more undersize squire on the tuppaware, and Fil decides he is going to open a pack of squid he has had in the freezer for about 4 years and put that out too. It was all yellow and freezer burnt. I tried to tell him, but he would have none of it.
Anyhow, 60 seconds later and the old squid rod bends in the rod holder,:o result being a keeper at 40cm. Well bugger me. He only just dropped the bait over the stern, so it would have been sitting right under the prop!!
A couple more drifts and throw backs revealed a definite patern, so i anchored just shy of the mark and lines out again. THe plastics went dead, not a touch on the grinner, but bugger me if that old squid didn't produce another keeper for Fil.
Stuff this i thought, so i stole some his 'yellow squid' and tossed it out only to be hit by a freight train that pulled the hook. Subsequent casts yeilded a couple more nice squire.:)
This continued for the next hour or so untill the tide change, by which time we had 8 squire between 37 and 55cm and one poor little bream on board (Fil loves his bream), so called it a day and headed home. AS usual, the "unplanned, last minute decision trip" payed off. Wish i had a dollar for every time that happened.;)
Cheers,
Damo
