Went out on dark to see what other types of fish would hit soft plassies and pulled in this bluey purple fish. is it part of the groper family or what.:-/ I got a heap of hits from all sorts as well but then went quiet.

Its not a morwong, they have fins that are really long and rake back down the length of their body.

its a slatey bream, AKA mother in law fish or blackall.

Here is a pic of one..note the pec fin.....long slender rakes back - nothing like a slatey bream. The morwong is really good eating, unlike the slatey that is OK but had better type of taste.

G'day

Its a slatey... If kept fresh they are ok to eat,

They do fight pretty well for their size too

It looks like what we called a moke when I fished up in Keppel Bay. I believe they get called a blackall around Hervey Bay, and a slatey bream around Brisbane.

From what I can gather they also get called a morwong around Brisbane whether that be right or wrong. They are a different fish to the morwong found in NSW etc.

G'day mate, THat's not the fish you asked the old fella about back at wello ramp about at around 8:30 Thursday night is it? Do you have a 15 odd ft white punt?

If so, i had the white platey sitting on the ramp.:)
I know them as slatey beam also. Pulled them out the bay up to 4kg before, and about 7kg out wide. Taste like mud.

Thanks to all for helping on idin this fish. It looked funny in the dark and i to looked at a photo of a mowong and thought the same as Marlin_ Mike.
It was silver with no yellow spots and purple on the top with small scales.
Plus another guy caught something like a mowong this week and it looks different to mine, mine also had a large fat mouth. PS. It put up a great fight in less than 10 feet of water until it hit the boat i felt like kickin it for not bein a snapper.
Cheers guys.
