Hi everyone, I'm thinking of buying a hornet trophy 3.90. It's a 1999 model with a 25 hp donk. A mate of mine said he thought these early hornets were a fairly wet boat and I was wondering if anyone else has heard this critcism. He also thought that the 25 hp engine would be a bit small for this boat given that they're fairly heavy. Has anyone got an opinion of this view?
There will be no more than 3 adults in the boat but I don't want to find that it just doesn't have enough grunt ,after I buy it!!
Guys I would really value your feedback on these 2 issues.

cheers
Peter

Apart from people who have the same set-up AND HAVE THE CORRECT PROPELLER FITTED, who can give advice with it loaded up, sometimes it is best to consider what the max HP rating is and go with that. If fitting 4st, going max is a very good idea but one can get away with the next common size down in 2st usually.

When the conditions allow, it is nice to be able to get there with a bit more speed at times.

Do some sums to ballpark where the 25hp sits as a % of max hp, lower than 60% even 70% sometime is not a good idea. IMO 25hp will probably be OK depends how fast you would like to go.

cheers fnq

I own a 2000' 390 hornet with 30 hp mercury Lighting (Tohatsu) on the boat. The max HP for a hornet is a 30hp & the max for hornet Trophy is a 40hp with the max weight being 95kg. I got these figures from Quintrex(Telwater).

I will tell you that the 25hp will be slow to get on to plane with 3 adults & gear so i would to get a 40hp on the bum to save you the pain as the boat is heavy. It is a wet boat but that only when the wind & chop gets up..

How much is that boat going for?? & what does it come with??

hey ive got a 1996 model with a 25 johnson when im loaded up with 2 batteries, fuel, fairly big esky with ice and drinks, mine will do 18-19knots easy and if i wanna push it, it will go out to 22knots. i rate them as a failry dry and soft riding boat compared to other small tinny's on the market
