View Full Version : Are the squid here yet???
Had a great winter chasing squid last year, either land based from the Welly Point jetty, or in the bay near the Hybers beacon. Just wondering if anyone has caught any yet?? Also is winter the best time for them in the bay?? Full moon or no moon, high tide or low, wind or no wind......
Anyone got any info it would be much appreciated....
Cheers

hhhmmm not too sure about your area, but I find squid are around all year, and tide does not SEEM to make a difference, but, winter time and still nights seem to be slightly better for Harbour type of Squidding, fom a boat it does not appear to make any difference, mind you, it may be no wind nights are better, because that's when I go, might be tens times as many on windy nights, but I am at home all cosy warm, one thing that I do though is to get there before dark, as quite often the best "bite" is right on dark and half an hour after,we get nearly the entire nights catch at that time, then they seem to just taper off, but still around all night most times.

been reports of lots of bream and other fish having alot of small squid in their bellies in the brissy river so i guess they might be around, no harm in trying tho is there
Cheers for the info so far guys. I might add that my best times have been at the jetty with the tide coming up to full, no moon and little wind (about 1 day a year in Moreton Bay :D). Have definitely found that wind is a factor, too much and the squid are nowhere to be seen.
How about colors of jigs?? I know that some people swear by the "glow in the dark" jigs, but I've had no luck at all with them. One night I found a guy absolutely braining the squid on the jetty, he showed me his jig and it was almost jet black!!! Couldn't find any in the tackle shops so I used a black texta on a previously non performing jig and it now catches it's fair share.

If your pier or fishing area is lit at night when you are fishing a dark to black jig will be the most effective of any colour but during the daytime they can show tendencies for a particular colour and that can change hour to hour as well.
I am going to have a shot for a few squid wed night so i will let you know how i go.

I thought I would answer my own question. Visited Welly Point pier last night to find quite a few smallish squid cruising around. Unfortunately none were it the feeding mood...each would come up to the jig and have a good look, but not smash it with their usual gusto........was a nice night though, about 2 knots of wind and plenty of baitfish smashing around.
Taking the boat out tomorrow to see if I can get a little luckier
my mate had a hunt for them around rainbow on sunday, didn't get anany, but that might have been cause he couldn't get though all the pike smashing his jig. Havent heard of any of the southern calimari showing up yet, but hopefully they'll be here soon

Went fishing on the Gold Coast this morning and started off at the Sundale Bridge trying to catch live bait. When I arrived (around 5am) there was a guy there jigging for squid.
I pull out my cast net, and in the first cast I catch 2 huge squid. You should have seen the look on the other guys face. He had been at it for awhile and I easily catch 2 twice the size of the little blighter he had caught.
More ass than class.
I have never had any luck the couple of times I have used my jig.
I went back there tonight and tried the jig again (witha glow stick) and had a squid follow it and swim around checking it out. I let the jig sink and it tugged at it but never hooked it. That was all the squid jig action I have had.
Interesting to watch their behaviour though.

I saw some near the wall off Caruso Island at the Pin 2 days ago...hit a couple on the head with a squidgy for fun and they kept coming back near the boat, a foot or so down in quite clear water. I didnt have a jig with me and they were not too hot for the squidy

Yeh mate they are around and I personally find em better in Winter. I fish landbased and they are all but gone from my spot by summer. Also, sight casting is the way I like to approach it, so any time in the day is best prefarably on a mid to high tide. I've found that they are off the bite at night and before sunup they are also no shows.
Better when I can see em anyways, that way I can pick off 1 at a time and not spook the whole school.
Bright jigs I like to use so I can keep an eye on it on the drop.
Picked up 9 in an hour and a half and picked up another 3 in 3 casts (Friday) while testing a new jig.
"Fluro's", no difference to me, maybe on the piers at night but I prefer rock groins. Good luck with em.

I read in the paper that Morton bay is full of Squid at the moment.
I'm going have a serious bash at them this weekend.
If you see me, say Hi. I'm the one with the fishing rod and squid jig! ;)
