Hi Kela,
Welcome to Mackay! You'll love it here.
Haven't got a lot of time right now to answer your question as I'm getting ready for fishing trip down at Sarina right now but have a look at this post I responded to a little while back.

When I get some more time I'll try and put up a better response. Give me a PM if I forget..
cheers,
Richard

All the spots that Richard has mentioned, plus Dumbleton Weir. Dumbleton Weir is a weir on the Pioneer River.
You can get here by taking the first left turnoff (Maraju Yakapari Rd) at the railway tracks on Sugarshed Road.
Follow this left hand turn, and it will take you parallel to the Pioneer River. A good spot to check out is anywhere where there are abundant rockbars interupting the current flow. Trust me there are ACRES of these. ;D
Another good spot to check out, is if you keep following maraju Yakapari Rd parallel to the river, after about maybe 10 minutes you will find a semi open area on your left with lots of large gum trees that overlooks the river, and you can see the weir wall from here. Head straight down there, and continue downstream ,as this is one of the places were the fresh meets the salt. I know my directions are dodgy, but if you persist its worth a look.
Lots of tracks leading down there, lots of shallow rocks, and plenty of barra and jacks. Use your typical barra style lures, with a few shallow runners for the low tide (the tide will push that far up the river). I've also heard of succes here with bibbless minnows.
I strees for you too seek advice from a local fishing store (preferably Tackle World) for more advice. They are in Shakespere st, mackay. These guys are really helpful.
Also, if you can get onto ausfish member t4topcat, he knows the area well. I'll try and get him to post in this thread for you.
Best of luck,
Cheers, Mitch.

G'day mate,
Mitch was telling m eto give you some info on the river up around thw weir area. Well, I generally fish the the rocks around where the Dumbleton-Farliegh road comes out and further up stream, I've managed about 7 Barra and a solid 42cm Jack as well as Tarpon up to about 35cm. I haven't fished up there for about 2 months so I really can't say how she's firing at the moment. I've only fished with lures so you might do better on live bait, but for the record i've been fishing Reidy's Taipans, X-raps (in the smaller size), some poppers and Rapala rattlin spots and Shimano lipless crankbaits. I have been told of some horse Barra hangin' around up there but the best I've pulled to date is 76cm. If you want anymore info drop us a line or I'll keep an eye on this thread. Anyway take care I might see you up there as I was thinking of heading up Sunday A'noon.
Cheers
Chris
