Hi everyone again , I was wondering if anyone had bought one of thoes cheap and nasty skirted trolling lures off ebay.
was looking at them but dont know how well they work in comparison to the name brands ie straight tracking trolling speeds etc.
thought they might be a reasonable investment considering I only dabble in that style of fishing and cant justify the price of the big name brands.
I know you get what you pay for but thought id ask.

thanks phil

Only lures I have bought off ebay are a couple of mother in law poppers from Palm Fishing.

Yet to try them out, but they look and feel Ok so heres hoping......for the price cant complain anyway.

they are SORT of OK, the hooks are crappy and badly tied on (no crimps) and the skirts are a tad shabby, but as a cheap use it a few times and no need to cry if you lose it, then they are OK.

In my opinion, the cost of going fishing and my time, are far greater then the cost of a few good quality lures. I would much rather burn fuel and my time towing a lure that has the reputation and is properly rigged so that if something takes it I have the best chance of landing it.

Why spend hours towing something that is inferior and 'might' get a hit if you are lucky?

In essence, the expensive pakulas and the like are just a moulded peice of epoxy with a few skirts attached. True, they have spent the time and money refining and fine tuning the action of these lures, but they are only as good as the rigging, and this is where the ebay ones are let down.

Best bet is to get a few and cut the leader and throw it away - hooks and all. Then re-rigg it using some good leader, hooks, crimps etc and you have a lure that will take fish AND still give you half a chance at landing them.

IMO many of the name brand skirted lures on the market are ridiculously overpriced, because fisherman are prepared pay what they ask. I am not. I have made many (ok, about 6) lure heads by simply machining a peice of plastic on a lathe and attaching 2 skirts on the @rse end. So far i have hooked and landed small blacks, mahi mahi, and wahoo. I now think it is far easier to buy ebay cheapies and re-rigg them. Simple.

Good luck,

Damo

I have bought Pakula and MBT lures only off ebay. Reasonable priced and are good quality lures that work.
No others have tempted me though.
