I have a Thunnus 16000f, that i would like to rebuild ,and maybe upgrade the drag, I have seen the schematic diagram on the shimano site, now, I would like to find a step by step disassemble and rebuild instruction.
Ive tried google but have not come up with anything.
Can someone provide a link to a site that shows HOW TO....
I have been toying with sending it to Jack Erskine but would prefer to have a go myself.

I'm no expert, but if you have parts left over, you've put it back together wrong

Rando im the same as you. I waould like to service my reels myself instead of paying for them to be done. They would be done alot more often.

HI Spiro.
I saw your post and used the links to have a look at the schematic drawings, like I said great on the big monitor, the drawing that comes with the reel is so small I can't read it.
I found a rod and reel down in the Nerang river a few years back and i managed to strip and rebuild it successfully( a little Daiwa 1500) , but I figured if I stuffed it up ,,,, no loss.
However my thunnus is one of my favourite reels and they are out of production now so I REALLY dont want to stuff it.
Having the diagram is one thing , procedure, is the key.

Hi Rando.
Third time I've tried to post a response to you, hopefully this time will work.
I've dis and re-assembled literally dozens of threadline and overhead reels (not lever drags, however), it's a hobby of mine.
After examining the schematic for this reel, I would advise you to give it to a Shimano dealer for any major work. At least if they stuff up, you have some genuine recourse.
This is the most complex reel schematic I've seen, over 100 parts.
While I would have a go at it myself, I really couldn't advise you to do the same, it bears absolutely no resemblence to a Daiwa 1500 IMHO!
Cheers and good luck, sorry I can't be of any more specific help.

mate had his done, it was sent to shimano as the dealer that services all his other reels wasnt prepared to do the thunnus. It went back to shimano twice as he wasnt happy with the first job. He has 2 thunnus's and loves them.

Hi Nigel , Blaze.
Thanks for the advise, I bought the reel off Milan, over at Pro-catch, and I remember him telling me it was a reel he would think twice about tackling. He knows a thing or two about reels and rebuilds reels regularly.
I would not attempt to touch it without a thorough set of instruction on dis/reassembly.
Only problem with the Erskine rebuild was the length of time it would be away,,, 4-6 weeks+the cost of mailing it there and back.
I might send it away after the Frazer comp, the rebuild includes Jack's carbontec drag washer upgrade so I should be able to crank out serious drag after.

Rando, the Shimano Thunnus reel is not out of production, they are still made for the USA market, there are afew parties in OZ that import them and resell via E-Bay. Waranty would be very dodgy, these reels are very simple to service, if you are looking at strip and rebuild then you really need to sit down, take a deep breath, take your time spreading the components out just like the parts break down, If in doubt don't mess about.
I own a few of these reels and they are fantastic.
Micheal.

Hi Barracat
Do you know where I could pick up another one , they are great reels.
As you say the machinery is quite simple , I just know from trial and error on other reels that if you have the sequence right it comes apart & goes together much more easily.
The reality is without instructions I dont want to touch it.
Mine is working ok , there is a bit of vibration if i spin it fast, and it has had some very heavy fish on it so there is bound to be some wear in there.
I just want to keep it in top order as I love using it.

Digital cameras are a handy tool for recording images of reel takedowns.

Take a photo after about every 3 or 4 parts come off.

Good luck

Rando,
There are a few up for grabs on e-bay, mostly 16000 series reels bigger than a 6500 baitrunner, but be worned these reels do have a weak point at the base of the handle stem, I have seen a few with fine cracks, I do believe it is a combination of overloading the reel ( drag pressure ) and heavey line class.
But these reel havr been claimed on warranty and honered by shimano.
I will have a look around for you, what size are you chasing.
Micheal.

I like the 16000, but would also like to look at a 12000, just to compare the two.
the 16000 is a resonably heavy reel so it would a interesting to compare them.
Any idea what $$ they go for now.

broke the reel seat off on 2 16000"s at melville island we used to use them on charter changed to baitrunner 6500 seem heaps stronger and dont flex like thunnus i thought they were a good reel until this happened .Hard to explain to a client when reel gets snapped off then rips the stripping gudes off rod!!!

Good day,
Run with Reggys dig cam concept, works well.Do all my own servicing/rebuilds and have found this method a1 for first time break downs. As reggy said take a image every 2-3 steps and you cant go wrong.

I have got a 16000 Thunnus I picked it up at a bargain price a few years ago, but have not used it much so far. I have it currently loaded with 30lb Platypus Platinum, but suspect it would handle heavier braid with ease.

I also have a full set of Baitrunners for bay and shallow offshore work. Thinking of setting the Thunnus up for offshore float lining and jigging etc.

Interested in others opinions on the Thunnus?.

- What line are you running on them?;

- and what rods have you found suit them best?

I am thinking perhaps 40lb braid over a Live Fibre 15- 24kg 6'6" or 7' spin rod. I run a TLD 25 over the O/H version of that blank and like it a lot.

Cheers

The thunnus has a weak point where the reel seat shaft is joined to the gear case, take off the side plate and have a look.I broke 2 16000's running only 30lb fireline, the reel has sideway's flex and snap's off similar to what the stradic does.

I agree with you on the weak point as i have posted the same comment earlier in this discustion, if anyone is interested you can pick them up through Kawana Bait and Tackle on the sunny coast, I do believe they are around the $350.00 mark, brand new in the box.

Thanks barracat and Dan.

I bought mine not long after they first came out for not much over $200. I wanted a reel for tossing poppers at GTs etc out at the Swains. Have used it little since my last Swains trip and want to put it into service again.

Did they every release a fix for the seat shaft?.

Sound like they fail under heavy drag pressure and using braid. So might have to stick to mono!

Thanks

Dave

if someone can fix this board so that i can load 100 pictures and 20,000 characters at a time, i will see about writing a rebuild post for this reel. my rebuild posts average 70 photos each. it's just too hard to load a few photos at a time with a post that is too long. what you are asking will already take about 8 hours go do the actual work, shoot the photos, load the photos and write the text. spinner rebuilds are often pointless because they are discontinued after several years to make way for a new model. alan

I don't know if I'm allowed to say it here Alan, but aren't your rebuilds archived on the Western Angler site? www.westernangler.com.au (http://www.westernangler.com.au)
For you who don't know, Alan Tani is the Zen Master of reel rebuilds/mods/upgrades.Tim

Thanks for the kind offer, i hope the mods or administrator respond.I've read all the rebuilds you've posted here.
You certainly make it look easy, and they are great reference tools.
If you do happen to do that rebuild and post it elsewhere could you advise me where to find it.

For those that might be interested. As this post is 12 months old.
I eventually sent my reel to Jack Erskine.
Due to delays in getting parts the reel was gone for quite a long time.
Jack in his kindness sent me a Rovex 7500 Bigboss, to use while he secured the necessary parts. Hows that for service???.I highly recommend Jack for any repairs, a true gentleman , and the reel came back feeling like new.

When my repaired reel finally arrived, I took it Rock/beach fishing at Iluka, I had not even had a cast with it but left it on my wet weather jacket well up the beach while I fished a nice gutter. You guessed,,, a bloody big wave rolled right up the beach and over the lot..... Siiiigggghhh.

Whats that song" If it was'nt for bad luck,,, would'nt have no luck at all!!

I gave her the usual post fishing clean up but who knows what got inside her.
It was two weeks before I could open it up for a gander, could'nt see any moisture so heres hoping!!!!!
Cheers
Rando
