I have been given some knife lures, and never having used any knife lures before, was after some advice.

Where to use, depth of water best used in, species of fish they attract, etc etc.

And i notice the hook for each is pre tied with cord. IS this just looped through the eye, I assume on the "head" end of the lure?

Packets are marked 300gms, length about 9 and a bit inches or 24cm.

Unexpected but appreciated gift, and looking forward to maybe chasing some bigguns with them in deeper water outside.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Nice gift, good all round jig, yes the hook is looped at the head of the lure as it is or on a separate solid ring then snapped or splitringed on to the leader. That is as basic as it gets, it would be best to find some articles in mags or see Duncan at Fishhead [Redland Bay] or Tackle Warehouse etc. Happy Jigging.;D

PS: My avatar is my mate on a 30kg+ ambo on a Knife jig.

G'day

Mike, you use them to jig up kingies and ambo's among other species outside.

A typical combo is a high speed overhead or spinning reel with about 50-80lb line.

Ay depth of water really, and a hell of alot of fun to be had.

I have a nice spinning reel spooled with 30lb braid and i use 55lb schneider mono as a leader. Would that suit you think? Otherwise i will have to bite the bullet and buy a new combo..............................ahhh gee life sucks sometimes.....LOL :)

Mike, the biggest myth in jigging is the high speed bit, the fastest a jig works is in the upward movement of the rod, that is as in a pump and wind to about 20m above the bottom or fish, and free spool back down again and repeat. Slower erratic action is better for Snapper, Pearlies and other reefies.
If you've got a TLD or heavy duty spin reel use these try jigging, If you are going to buy a new rod and reel for jigging do your homework first. A Spheros 14000 / T-Curve 200 / 50lb braid is a good medium outfit, top end is Stella 20000 / T-Curve 400 / 80lb braid, Saltigas are also good and Accurate have top overhead reels.
Try before you buy!!!

Hey Marlin-Mike, have you been living on a deserted island for the last few years, or are you just taking the piss? ;D

Anyway, just in case you missed the jigging revolution, here are a few pointers:
1. It's tiring
2. It's expensive
3. It's a lot of fun!

Basically 1, 2 and 3 above are related:
1. It's tiring because you either jig (fast retrieve) or pull like a donkey with up to 14Kg of drag.
2. It's expensive because only top quality gear survives that sort of treatment (eg. Saltiga/Stella = $$$)
3. It's a lot of fun because when a 50lbs king slams your jig, and you get both back in less than 10 minutes, it's just awesome!

To get an idea, go to youtube and search for jigging.

Mike, there was a really good thread a couple of years back where someone, (I think he was a charter operator out of WA) went into jigging tackle and technique at great length. The pics of his catches will be lost though. I've tried a search but can't remember his name, to narrow it down.

Someone else may remember.

FWIW, on 3 occasions, in a lumpy sea, I have just left a jig a couple of feet off the bottom, put the rod in it's holder and let the motion of the boat work it. They were "bargain bin cheapos" and I wasn't really interested. The results were two bust offs whilst trying to wrestle the rod out of the holder and my biggest cobe to date. Location: E2 beacon each time. Just shows, you don't need that much finesses or deep water to get 'em to work...........must try it seriously though one day, as after catching the cobe, I bought a dozen knife jigs.............Jeeeeez, them hooks are pricey ::)

To think, when we used to jig for cod in the Scottish sea lochs in the late 60's early 70's, we used nothing but the old chrome car door handles and spark plugs............the breakers yards were kept busy back then ;D
