Reel for Longtails

Looking at setting myself up too chase the longtails in the bay. Just got my hands on an 8/9 strudwick fly rod and was looking at a reel to suit. From my understanding I need a cork drag and a bit of money:) . But seriously what should I look for in a reel and what would be the best value for money given that it will only be something I do on the odd occasion. Looked at a VK the other day, I think that is what it was called but was wondering if there was something else that someone could recommend.

Scott,buy the best reel you can afford.Something that will hold at least 300m of backing.You dont need a cork drag.There are plenty of good fly reels on the market that dont rely on a cork drag.
Whats your price range so I can suggest something?

I like a cork drag reels especially on fast running Tuna. I use Wellstone fly reels, they are great, around $600.00 & made to last a lifetime but there are plenty of other good reels on the market. 300 metres of backing is a good idea.

I don't really want to spend over 300 bucks. I know that is not much considering you can go way over that if you want to. But its only going to be used for a few months of the year. I've been looking at the pflueger trion fly reels has anyone used them? If not what else would you suggest for that sort of money?

You might have to look second hand Scott for that money unfortunately.Keep your eye out some bargains come along from time to time.
Although I just had a look at the Redington reels.They come into that price range.I have never held one but they look alright.Someone else might be able to tell us more.
Also have a look at www.danblanton.com (http://www.danblanton.com) The forum there is a wealth of information.

I caught a 84cm Longy on a plastic Orvis Rocky Mountain reel. Used my finger as drag (hurt a bit).

Wouldn't do it all the time but any reel will catch a longy so long as you are careful and don't overstress it. Have a look at Okuma SLV's for cheapy options.

Or you could have a look at Alvey salt water fly reels model 425B or BE

I have a Fenwick large arbour that has knocked over LT's to 15kg on a 9wt rod. Takes a while though - good drag. Paid around $350 for it.

Bransfords up in Cairns is advertising a P4 large arbor reel, disc drag that the boys up there are using for barra and creek work - cheap (under $200)
