View Full Version : Cheap crap esky

I recently bought an Essential 210l esky from the local marine shop.
It was considerably cheaper than the brand name esky's
This was evident with the cheap moulded, sort of melted, welded on plastic hinges.
But I figured I could replace these at a later date.
Tonight, though, I looked more closely at the esky and found that either end of the lid is warped upward approximately 1cm.
Even when the rubber pull down latches are fastened there is no chance of obtaining a seal.
I have only used it twice and was disappointed in the length of time the ice lasted.
Has anybody else experienced this with the cheaper brand esky's?
Should I try to screw some type of hinge on to pull the ends down to create a seal? or
Should I take it back ,ask for a refund and put it towards a decent esky ?
I know,I should have realized that you only get what you pay for but this sux.
p!ssed off

LOL Scott..you got it...you got what you paid for...sometimes paying less is only false economy and a waste of money.

Yeah Pinhead,
You're spot on.No-one to blame but myself.
Its funny though I did think before I bought it ,though.
Like really, how much can go wrong with an esky?Catches, hinges sure. But surely you could reasonably expect it to close properly and do what an esky does........Keep the cold air in.
But then again these days its not surprising.

Mate,
If it is 'not suited for the purpose of which it is intended' and/or 'not of merchantable quality' then you are well within your legal right to return the item and ask for a refund in whatever form you originally paid ie cash for cash or credit on your card.
What brand is it anyway?

Hi Bootyinblue,
I think I will take your advice and return it.I,ll buy a reputable brand as a replacement.
The brand seems to be ESSENTIAL.Least that's what the sticker says.

Well it sounds like its not such an 'essential' item. Yea you just need to be polite and firm and request a refund based on blah blah blah.
And remember the option of repair, replace or refund is your call and not that of the retailer!
Any problems, tell them they are breaching sections of the Sale Of Goods Act and you will speak with Fair Trading to resolve the issue.

Thanks mate.
I always try to settle things in a civil manner first.
Hoping it wont come to threats to get a fair result.
Trouble is while ever there is cheapskates like me to buy cheap crap there will be merchants that will happily sell it,despite dubious quality.
Good ole China. They sure have the manufacturing process downpat.
Why sell you something that lasts a year when they can sell you one a week.

I bought a Big Chilli 110 litre off ebay. Picked it up from Nerang.
Its great, keeps the ice well, strong, never a problem, great buy. $162.00 so its about less than half the price for a similar esky in the shops.
Mike
ditto to marlin mike,
I got one of big chilli and its a champion, be aware though, if bidding on ebay sometimes the bids exceed what you can pick them up for in the shops. I got a 100 ltr for 99 bucks, tookabout 4 eskies before I won one at a reasonable price you cant beat that for value.
Mamu
ditto to marlin and mamu,
I got my big chilli cooler of e-bay also, 40litre ice-box $53, converted it into a plumbed bait tank/live well. Can not fault it whatso-ever :)
i love how the big chilli mob on ebay caters for the Qld fisherman, they give the capacity in litres,
the dimensions
& how many cans it will hold...;D

The funny thing I observed yesterday with this ESSENTIAL esky is that while the sun is on it,the lid seals. But when its in the shade or at night, the lid seems to contract upwards leaving a substantial gap either end.
This may be due to a combination of the length(about 1.4m)and poor quality materials/construction.
cheers Scott
