Guys,
It has come time for me to re-spool two of my rods. One is a alvey and the other is a Bait runner.
I normally use the old pencil trick. But i seem to get a fair bit of twist with the alvey.
I just interested on how other people re-spool their reels.
Thanks
Neil
P.S. Looks I'll be putting Platypus Platinum on both.

I am same as you Neil...The old pencil trick..
i usually just throw the spool in a bucket of water & then wind it on. first trip in boat if you're worried about line twist, before rigging up just let a 100 or so metres of line out the back of moving boat. pays to do this every few trips . just make sure you have clear water so that someone does not run over the line :P

Thanks for that tip DR.
I'll be putting that one under my fishing thinking hat.

Hey mate
I dont use a pencil but use a screw driver with a wet cloth to limit heat damaging the line seems like the easiest method.

i do the pencil trick to making sure that it goes on the reel the same way it comes off the spool(on overheads)... it works well but the main problem is we do a lot of trolling so if the swivel does'nt do it's job then thats where our trouble starts...big twists!

i didnt think there was a difference.
Can you explain on/off the same way

OK, I have posted this before, but I will repeat it for you, ALL line spools should be supported by and "axle" pencil, screwdriver whatever, it does not matter, for an overhead reel the spool just simply rotates as you wind on, no twist is imparted on reel or spool, Alvey uses the same idea, BUT with an Alvey the line is wound on with no twist, BUT a twist is induced when casting, because the line comes off the side of the reel, but retieved straight on, a spinning reel (eggbeater) is another thing altogether, the new line spool is still on an axel, and when you pull line off in a straight pull you actually put in a twist with each turn of the handle, BUT when you cast/let out line you "untwist" it so when you are fishing you have no twist (unless you wind the reel with no drag and the spool spinning) baitrunners act as an Alvey and do induce twist as the line is let out with the spool turning (like the no drag scenario) I have done numerous tests on this subject and actually counted twists and handle turns and so on.

Noelm,
Thanks for the in-depth explanation. It makes more sense now.
I did (as i always do) check for how to respool line to decrease the line twist and did not come up with your post.
Thanks again
Neil
