I have a 96 Landcruiser ute 4.2 deisel,having a bit of trouble when towing my boat up large hills (like gateway bridge),the temp starts to rise fairly quickly,but not to boiling where I get on the other side of hill & cools down.I have put a new clutch fan & thermostat,with not much difference.Radiator is full of coolant but looking a bit on old side.If I replace radiator can I purchse a bigger one as I don't want to buy another standard one & still get hot.
Any sugestions ?

Has it always done this,more than likely just need your radiator cleaned,since you have fitted a new water pump i doubt your fan belt is slipping,with diesels if they over fuel they heat up fast,have you ever adjusted your fuel on the injector pump.

get your radiator rodded (they take the tanks off and poke a rod/blade up each tube and clean them out, then when reassembled have it reversed flushed (air and water forced backwards through the entire system), thermostat must be removed for this to happen. This proceedure is only worth while doing if the fins on the external part of the radoator are in good condition, if not go with a recore. You wont need a bigger radiator, this one has done the job for 10 years.

I'm with blaze, do the power flush at the radiator shop, or re-core if required.
Also bastard has a point with the water pump, there only pressed metal vanes on the pump and will rust out in time.
But before you do, price a new radiator or check out the wreckers, for a good condition one, by the way that will also have to be cleaned as soon as a radiator dries out they make more scale.

I'm with blaze and roughas get your Radiator cleaned.
The thermo would playup all the time not just under tow.

If you are saying the radiator is on the old looking side get the opinion of the pros. I'm sure they will tell you if you need a re core or not.
Re core is when they replace all the fins and use your original tanks.
IMO people tow large things with cruisers without needing larger radiators so I'd stick with the stocko.

I will take it down to red devils radiators next week,I've had car 2 years,always had trouble.

I had similar troube with he Surf. After having a few experts look at it I ended up at Red Devil at Browns plains. Excelent service. They put two tubes of oil into the fan fluid drive unit and it has been great ever since. Not sure if that will be able to be done with yours as they are all different. With the surf they can add the fluid to the fluid drive of the fan. In other models/makes you have to replace the fan/fluid drive.

The fan is designed to stop working at 2500 rpm, or there abots, mine was stopping at under 2000. In theory and normal operation you are going fast enough for the air to flow through the radiator to cool it. But if you are not going fast and your revs are say 2000 rpm and your fan is cutting out at 1900 rpm then you will not get anough air flow. As soon as your speed increases your temp will come down fairly quick.

your radiator is blocked you can check this by putting your pedal to the metal if temp rises then falls when you back of you have a blockage get a new radiator its about the same cost as getting yours cleaned and its new

wth out sounding silly if your vechile has had this prob from the time you owned it
make sure you dont have a air flow prob
eg a bullbar with spotties or winch will cause this prob
does it have a radiator shoud ? should have one
how far does the viscous fan spin with the motor not running if you give it a flick more than a turn needs re oiling
these are easy and inexpeensive checks that are comenly over looked

I had the same problem with a 2000 hilux diesel it would only get hot under load,2.5 tubes of silicon oil available from toyota and pretty cheap too fixed my problem and speaking to a few people it is a fairly common problem and a lot of workshops will put a tube of silicon oil in new toyota fan hubs before they fit them cheers :)
