has any one heard of using aniseed or wd40 on lures to improve chances of a catch. Cheers

I've heard that they are used but I'm not sure how effective they are. I would think the wd40 would be pollution.

Just found a link that explains it. The wd40 is supposed to hide the scent on your hands.

Aniseed, yep, Aniseed.
Good stuff , that's why it's outlawed in some states...........

I'm glad you asked bdh2019. I'm going to have to try the aniseed. I wonder if a small chunk of licorice stick would hold onto a hook under water. That would be perfect to use inside a tube jig. This might be an interesting spring season for smallmouth bass.

best source of Anniseed is those crappy weeds that seem to grow along the railway lines, plenty of guys I know have tried and say that it helps (especially with Snapper) but it has ben banned in some places, which I guess sort of proves that it must work huh!

I grabbed some garlic spray the other day and will use it on my old gulps (reuse them). I might see how they go this labour day weekend..... hopefully off to hervey Bay for a lookie.

Recently tried a new one..you cant buy it in shops but it works a treat...RED BAIT oil...factories down here make the fish feed pellets for the salmon/trout farms and they squeeze all the oil out...local marine dist collects it all and sells it in 20 l drum for $70...bloody great stuff....think i am hooked on this one...especially when i find that most of the deep water fish we catch are always full of red bait...

Sorry for the ignorance but why is aniseed banned in some states and some comps. I would have thought if it was banned then all performance enhancing baits/lures would be banned also. Most soft plastics these days seem to have some sought of gunk on them that is the latest and greatest attractant around.

I use olive oil to protect tackle from rust , seems to help attract the fish as well.

i did a test rock fishing in my area with some "proven bait enhancing pheramone spray" and bait that hadnt been sprayed. i used the same bait (alternating twixt whitebait an prawns) an caught 3 nice bream on the un sprayed bait and 2 kelpfish/wirras? and a puffer on the sprayed stuff.

I dont know weather laugh or cry. The garlic or the anaseed I think might help, but wd-40, please! I thought we were trying to keep man-made polution out of the water. To keep your gear from rusting, spray them with something that is friendly.

Garlic on the plastics seems to work well on the lizards, probably more success than with gulps from the packet. Just seems to be such a strong smell that it taints everything else in the bag. Have not caught other species with this spray.

WD 40 is made from distillates and fish oil. so while it may be refined....it is(in part) an organic compound. Not sure how it is different but Inox is classed as food grade. suitable for use on equipment for processing food.:o :o I wouldn't spray it on your nuts (:-[ peanuts) for flavour tho'.

cheers, roo.

Best and easiest attractant to aquire would have to be your own spit. Read an article on how human sweat and oil will repel fish however human saliva will attract them. Im not suggesting andone lick there pillie before tossing it or french kiss your live herring, but a quick spit and rub wouldn't go astray. I cant say this has drastically improved my personal catches but it posatively hasn't effected it negatively.

I believe the article was in "Ron Calcutts Complete Book Of Fishing."
