Things are looking good for the comp this year folks- it really is shaping up to be good weather and good fishing. The weed has been gone for sometime now and the beach looks like it use to.
We managed to get on to the tailor 2klms south of Dilli Village, they were around 60cm and we had some big runs and bust ups!- incoming tide (big water) and they hit about 15min after sundown. We were using pillies with a touch of aniseed.

cheers

mmm... you're right Sambos- although not the biggest fish you have seen they are certainly healthy and promise a good season.

Interesting you say you got onto fish that size in Sept. Last years comp saw the biggest tailor landed by Phil Simpson was 3.999kg and that was in May.

It has always my belief that the bigger fish arrive first as they are the stronger swimmers followed by the smaller. But if you look your fish in Sept and Phil's in May it kind of shoots down my theory.

Its that age old question- are the fish bigger at the start of the season or at the end?

what do you think?

i have always done well in this area this time of year all these fish surpringly were caught during daylight hours.i saw one caught during the closed period right beside the sign said to weigh 7.5 kg it was a big fish .was fishing a couple of mornings on the beach near waddy beside greg lampretch (reefmaster).he pulled some good tailor of a morning i think to about 3.5 kg of memory and we both lost some larger specimens .i wasnt using wire only had 30 pound leader (missing from tackle box with ganging pliers bloody kids) and was constantly getting bitten of on fresh chopper fillet.i pesonally have never done well on the larger fish earlier than july
i think the larger fish hang on the close in reefs year round and head in to the beach ona regular basis .but during peak spawning time(closed period)they stay in for some period and have some fun with the girls before returning to the reefs

Caughtt a few to 7lb last september. My brother headed up a month later (end of october) and caught a heap around the same size. Nothing bigger, but alot more than i managed to get in seppy. He got all his on big poppers down at indian whereas i was mainly hitting waddy up. So there are some big girls around later in the year. Dunn about earlier though?

That’s a good clean fish Jackash!

There is still factor X to take into consideration and that is because I have done well in the early season- I am left with that impression- this is all only theory remember!
I do well around Sept as well and we certainly get a lot of photos sent in of the boys that get on so I guess it comes down to you being they when they are. Having said that Sambos speaks wisdom with his comment about the reefs so I might ask around about this a bit more.
