Hi all,
Have been considering getting a 4-8kg outfit for slightly bigger fish and was looking for help and suggestions. I'm looking for a rod and reel than can be fairly multi-purpose. I'll need a threadline reel, which will probably be spooled with 8 or 10lb fireline. I'll be looking to use it for throwing both heavier plastics round (hoping to get onto the jack scene next season) as well as throwing medium size poppers or slugs for trevally. Budget will be absolute max of $350.

So far I've seen two combos that might fill the job. The raider snapper looks like a good prepackaged combo within my range ($300 at THAT mart). Most reports I've read have been pretty positive and it seem like it can handle most of my applications reasonably well.

My other option was a Plueger contender im6 rod, i think it was about 8-12lb rated and only 100 at that mart. I could easily match that with a 4000 size daiwa or shimano.

Thoughts or experiences with these combos? Alternate suggestions? I'd appreciate any feedback you can give me.
Joel

I have the raider snapper. Its a good rod but I find the handle is just too long and makes accurate casts up the creek a bit hard and it can sometimes be a bit annoying. I guess it just comes down to personal preference. Otherwise I think its a good rod with plenty of power in the butt to handle the bigger fish.

at christmas i got a starlo stix snapper spin and a stradic 4000 great combo to use for snapper this winter but have been using it on trevally, tailor and yellowfin tuna and its stood up pretty well so far. a friends got the snapper raider and it does feel much better.

the normal rackraider rod also has heaps of power in the butt and can still chuck accurate casts.

hey mate i just bought my new combo and it is the same size you are looking for. i ended up buying a 4000 shimano stradic and put it on the daiwa tierra rod 17 - 20 pounds. the daiwa tierra rod is awesome i picked it up for $149. have a look at the daiwa rods because i was looking at buying the shimano snapper raider. they both felt like nice rods but personally i liked the daiwa more. good luck Josh.

Thanks for your comments boys, I appreciate your help. Scotty, I'm really looking for a bit more power with this one which was why the long butt was a plus for me on the raider, but I can see what you mean, I don't think you'd do many comfortable underhanded casts with that rod.
Greg- what lb line are you running on that stradic? and how much did you pay for the combo, if you don't mind me asking?
Laney- will have a look at the tierra, seems like it's in the right price range.

Has anyone used the contender???????
