Hey ausfishers i have a slight problem that im hoping you may be able to solve for me... I would like to buy a new low profile baitcasting reel eg. Daiwa Sol, Chronarch or something along those lines. My problem is i would like to be able to use it for bass and barra fishing, my thoughts were if i got a Daiwa Sol it would be great for bass but maybe the drag would not be up to impoundment barra, on the other hand if i got a Chronarch or Curado it would be fine for barra but maybe a little heavy to cast light lures for bass. Has anyone found a reel that they can use for both barra and bass???

Any help or suggestions regarding these reels or others for my desired use would be great, or is it a case i need two reels for two different jobs.... cheers

get a Sol or an Alphas (jap version) nothin' wrong with the drag in them same size and number of washers as a millionaire just chuck a carbontex kit in and say hello to 6kg+ know a few people who use these reels for impoundment barra with no issues. otherwise if on a budget and don't mind the weight get an Abu Revo of some sort, good drag out of the box but a little bulky/heavy compared to the daiwa

Get a chronarch or curado with a spare spool. And have a barra spool and a bass spool. The spools take about 20 seconds to swap over. Just open the side panel and the spool slips straight out

I use a ABU 5600 DS on my bass baitcaster set-up. Threw some 30lb on it and it handled some fairly substantial barra at Awoonga. But you don't have to fish ridiculous drag settings in the territory I was fishing. Somewhere like Monduran would be a different story, and longevity may be an issue with constant barra use. It's not exactly a low profile reel, but is compact and light enough to cast all day comfortably. But for the price, I'm more than happy with the service I've got from this reel. That said, if you've got more cash to play with refer to wheezer's reply.

I agree with Flex the Current Curados are a big improvement on the old ones and they were pretty fine. just get say a 100D and get a deep spool and maybe upgrade the washers - but see how it goes out of the box first.
How light do you want to cast for Bass? if your only casting Jackels etc you could get by with a bigger reel. I reckon the 100 will cast down to about 3-4grams in the rite hands!
I just so happen to have a Current model Curado 101D for sale but thats the left wind version - PM anyone interested

Thanks for the quick relpys guys, Wheezer what is an carbontex kit?? How much for one and where would i track one down???

The chronarch and curados also still sound like a good option, the duel spool idea sounds pretty good, is it possible to get one of these with like a small wiffle spool that wont hold to much line for bass and then a bigger spool for the barra??? mmmm what i mean by that is if i got the small model will the larger spool still fit in it???

Arnie,

I think the old model 100 curado spool will fit the new model its a lot deeper than the current 100D with magnalite spool but dont quote me on that one. shud be able to contact Shimano Australia to see what fits what. think a few ausfishers know whats what too.
Erskins in Cairns can supply Carbontex drag washer upgrades someone was also talking leather washers providing much greater drag capacity also!

I bought myself a Curado 300 to use or barra and bought a second spool for lighter line for the bass. Casts light River 2 Sea bubblenpop 65's no problems. Just adjust the reel to suit the weight and away you go. Good drag on it too out of the box and holds a lot of line if you need it. Barra spool has 200 metres of 44lb jigging braid on it and the bass spool has 14lb run on top of backing. Can upgrade the drag too if you want. At the moment I see no need to with mine till I get totally smoked. Bring it on I say!!!!

Light harbodies for bass your better off with a small spin reel. The sol can handle barra, i've personally witnessed one pull in a 130+ woonga barra so yeh there up to it but the line capacity id a little bit trouble some. I'f i was in you situation i'd personally go one of the new curado's probably in the 200 size and then buy a secondary light spin reel for the bass. This will cover your full lure range from weightless soft plastics right up to big hard bodies for the barra and then if you want to chase bass with the baitcaster you can still cast jackells and spinnerbaits with 30lb braid (this is all you need your rod will shatter before it can handle enough drag to warrent using 50lb, the only reason to go 50lb is for extra abraision resistance on your mainline) without a fuss and you don't have to muck around with changing line over on your spool, if you want to be more sporting then back the drag off.

mmmmm the curado's really seem to have a big following obviously indicative of their quality and performance....good to see.

Ive just stumbled upon another reel which has send my bain into a frenzy the Daiwa Saltist Hard Rock Fish.....anyone heard anthing good about it???? obviously it would dominate barra but would it be suitable for bass???

Sorry for all the questions guys im about as fickle as a Dart on fly when it come to putting my hard earned down for a new toy...

It sounds pretty good, have you used it casting light lures, surface poppers, jackles and such before??? if so how did it perform, was there too much start up inertia from the bigger spool or was is all smooth sailing???

Which style of fishing will be dominant, bass or barra?
If most of your fishing is bass, with the occasional barra trip, the abu revo sx are a great little reel, but if you chase the barra more, with the bass as the side dish I would look along the lines that Jeremy suggested with the baitcaster for the barra and a quality thread line for the bass.
Bugger it, just buy two reels, we wont tell any one

mate i have been told the daiwa sailtist has taken over from the curado as perffered mid range reel. i was told this by tackle shop owners up here in darwin so thats from a barra point of view i dont no much on the bass side of things.

ah ok sweet, at least it will be a good barra reel by the sounds of it, would the 4kg of drag really be enough to stop some big impoundment horses though??? Im trying to contact Jack Erskine to see if he can ugrade the drag system in it.

So by the sounds of this forum the Daiwa HRF would be a good barra reel but unsure if it would be ok for bass.......

I use a Daiwa Zillion 7:1 and a couple of TD Z Big Bait Specials for Bass and Barra. I have also been using a TD Advantage, which is plenty of reel. For heavier stuff I use a Blue Backer. Daiwa's have very good drag systems now.

Hi Arnie,
My boss recently bought a HRF for catchin Silvers in his private dam. It's spooled with 12lb braid.I had very little problems casting a Buggi Pop 35 with it when I had a quick go.I'm guessing they are around 3-4 grams.A very nice reel. And he can't fault it.

If you were to choose this reel,I would recommend you look at one of Mr Erskins Carbontex washer kits. The stock drag washers seem more than capable for Bass. But Barra are another kettle of fish. That being said I didn't test the stock washers to their limit.

With the Carbontex kit,You'll be able to apply alot more pressure to ya drag system for Barra,While still having that silky smooth lower end pressure more suited to Bassin.

This reel should handle braids up to 30lb O.K.

From reading the above posts,The Curado seems like it could also be a good option if two spools are included.A quick spool change and ya ready for either species. You may also need a washer kit for this reel though.I have no experience with it,And dunno what it's upper end drag pressure is like.I'm assuming from what I read,The lower end is quite smooth,And Bass friendly.

Ahhh Hardb8!!! Thats exactly what i wanted to hear!!! Im goin to get the HRF and get an extra spool and perhaps get that treatment done to one of them that lowers line capacity with like cork or something???? and have one spooled for bass and one for barra. Yer i rang Jack this morning and i have to get the dimensions for the washers and he will make some up for me. What a bloody champion!!!

Cheers everyone for helping me out! thanks
