Has anyone had any experience with the 2.8L 6 Cyclinder Turbo Diesel Patrol engines. Have found a good 98 model wagon with low km's but am a bit unsure about the engine. I know they didn't make many of them before they went to the 3L versions. Any help would be appreciated

hi
in my experince they are a fairly solid motor
the only thing ive had to deal with at work is the harmonic balancer coming loose
this flogs the crank shaft $$$$$$$
but inmo they are a gutless motor around town there like a wet weekend and no better on fuel than 4l jobbies
the rd28 is a bit of a pig thats why they dont make them any more but the guys whoown them love them
all the best

I've had one for about 4 years now, 98 model and have always been very happy with it. A slug around town, yes - but keep the revs up to em and they go just fine. It's a car I found I really had to get used to driving. Had mine on Moreton/Fraser many times full of people & gear towing 5m boat through soft sand never any dramas, my snatchem is still in its new wrapper.

Fuel: my experience is you don't do that much better than the 3L or 4.2 which I have also driven a bit, probably only marginally better. Don't choose the 2.8L on this basis alone. I think the biggest thing the 2.8L's got going for them now is that they are probly 5k cheeper on average then the 3L or 4.2.

Engine has always been spot on in mine, only problem I've had is a dead clutch at 180k - probably a symptom of needing to ride it a bit more than normal, especially when reversing the boat trailer up the driveway. But had to replace the flywheel too which made things more $$, Nissan put a dual mass flywheel in them which can't (or is very dificult) to machine.

If there was any wispers going around, it was them dropping the bottom end or another terminal issue around 130,000 + Klms. it was one of the reasons they changed to the 3ltre turbo diesel.

But like them all you get good and bad ones... just hope you dont get a bad one.

Mag,

Not 100% up with prices these days but I'd say if you can get a good one with 120k for around 19-20k you'd be doing well enough.

When I bought mine 4 years ago I shopped around alot and paid 25k with 140km on the clock (it was in top condition) which I think was a good price back then. So 4 years later, high teens to twenty would be roughly about right. One on carpoint with 210km for $16,890.

I picked up a 97 2.8TDwith 128,000 on the clock, the yard was asking 18,990. They gave me 14grand trade in on a 92 GQ cab chassis, god i miss that ute.

I'm getting around 13.5 litres per 100k's with mine. I just took my full lenght roof rack off and hope to reduce that to about 12 per 100.

Good luck with what ever you decide on.
