Hi Guys,

I'm pretty new to fishing for Spanish and other than trolling around a few lures that is about all the effort I have put in for them. I am keen to troll some Gar and have made a couple of rigs up for them and want to know if they will be suitable or is there room for improvement. I based the skirt rig up on memory of an old setup off a pro dory that I saw once. The second rig is a live bait rig with a stinger hook. All rigs consist of Shogun Barrel Swivels, 105lb Single Strand Wire, 9/0 VMC O'Shaughnessy Hooks, 6" Octopus Skirts and the stinger hooks are 1/0 Owners. The bullets were given to me by a mate whose sourced them off a Pro. I have also rigged up a couple of heavier chin guards also. I'm keen for info on trolling specifically and live baiting; bait rigging, how much line to let out. whether to suspend live bait rig under a balloon or weight with a small sinker?

Cheers

Go to Pro Tackle on Ross River Rd (If they are still there!!!) and ask for their flyer on rigging gar, skip baits, pillies, split tails etc, etc.

Fantastic little A 5 sized printout showing how to rig such slow speed trolling baits.

Dicko - all looks good. Short wire trace is the go and I reckon you might be able to find some smaller (yet as strong) swivels if you look around. On the live bait rig I would be running the stinger wire from the hook eye rather than where you have it.

The stingers work a treat on all trolling lures/deadbaits - I wouldnt put something in the water without them but keep the treble size up.

Good Luck

Cheers

Tru Blu,
Pro Tackle has moved to Dalrymple Road, not far from the back of the Toyota dealer on Duckworth Street.
