Hi Guys I've just started to try plastics and was wondering how you get them down in the deep water when the current is running? I've looked for heavier jigs but the heavier the jig the bigger the hook size, as I like to keep the hook size down. Any advice /help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Fishing_Freddy,

You can get your soft plastics nearer the bottom by attaching split shot sinkers to your line for extra weight or by using a "crappie rig." A crappie (CRAH-pee) is a type of fish over here in the US. This rig is used mainly with live bait (minnows) but many people including me, use it with soft plastics and jigs too. Here is a pic.

Alternatively.......

You send out a sea anchor which will help you slow the rate of drift your boat is experiencing against the tide/ direction of the current. this is especially when the wind is controlling your boat and is in a different direction to that of the current.

I bought a cheap version of one for $30.00 and it works a treat. Using one will help keep the size of the jig head down.

Thanks Craig I will give it a go when I get the chance to go out fishing next which wont be any time soon as our six week old daughter takes up most of the time I'm not at work.

Thanks Scalem I'll try the split shots first. Where did you pick up your cheap sea anchor if you don't mind me asking? Just in case I need to get one as last trip the current was roaring thru. thanks again Ken
