Hi all

I tried to do a search for this one and was having trouble getting results...so here goes. I am relatively new to the braid game and I must admit I am still not 100 percent convinced that I am not just paying for a clever marketers Porsche lease payments8-). Anyway, my question is this..

Should I rate Braid the same as Mono...i.e. is 6lb braid the equivalent to 6lb mono or do I go a little higher in the braid??? I have come from Mono background, so it is difficult to know.

I have a Berkly Dropshop series II 7'2" 2 - 4Kg with a Shimano Symetre 2500 and I didn't know if I should go 6lb or 10 lb Fireline (possibly crystal).

Then a mate of mine told me to put Penn 10x on it:-/. Now most of you would say go the braid...Especially as I am flicking plastics BUT!!! Doe's anyone have a good argument for the Mono??? I was planning to use 12lb Platypus Platinum leader ...mostly to support the local manufacturer.

Your guidance will be appreciated:)

8lb Fireline no worries, or Super braid if you want to support Platypus

If plastics are involved, I think the benefits of braid is the go. I look at the breaking strain in 2 ways. Using braid allows me to have more of a heavier breaking strain line on the reel.

I think you could use 8lb Fireline (125yd) or 15lb Spiderwire (maybe 200yd) on your Symetre 2500.

Bilgeboy ..... You cant really compare the two ! 6lb braid could break at 10-12 lb :o (If you have good knots) 6lb mono (pretest) will break at around 6lb ..... The real difference is that the diameter of braid is much smaller (half to a third) ..... so you can get more line on smaller reels or use heavier line. :) Another benefit is little stretch (great feel & easy hook ups) ..... The down side is you should use softer rods to avoid pulling hooks .... & the big one is ... less abrasion resistance :( (hence the use of good leaders! .... Anyhow it is great to use but there is still a place for mono8-) NAGG

I use super 100 as leader sometimes still. With braid you rate it on knot strength. Stuff like Flamell pe breaks very close to its actual stated weight where as fireline and the likes is much stronger.
