Fraser Island Fishing

Hi all,

I'm a new member to the website, always visited but never joined.
Everyone always has good information on questions asked so i thought i'd join to find out some information on fraser island. I'm heading there for easter to do some 4WD and swimming but most importantly fishing. I know there are alot of nice headlands there for rock fishing and was just wondering if anyone knew any good fishing spots and even baits and rigs to use there to go for some good fish. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

I was up at Orchid Beach only two weeks ago and am now suffering what is known in my family as "post fraser depression" which can only be cured by more fishing.

Unfortunately there are not to many tailor around at this time of year, so your focus will probably be to the basic bread and butter species - Bream, Whiting, Flathead, and Dart and depending if your willing Mulloway.

If your a bait man - Fresh is best. I got a good haul of Bream and Dart from a good hole just below Middle Rocks (ie just north of Indian Head) using fresh Pippies. However pilchards on a ganged rig did acount for a few bream as well.

A good size hole or gutter on the southern side of a headland is one of my fav beach formations as you never know what will turn up.

You will need to focus around dawn and dusk as per normal, and even better if it matches a high tide. If you make the effort to fish outside of 'gentlemen' hours you will be rewarded.

The northern side of Indian Head is a fav rock fishing spot in the right conditions you never know what you will pick up, particularly if your spinning some metal lures.

There are plenty of good looking gutters all the way up the beach.

However on our way home we noticed a lot more weed coming on to the beach. Hopefully the slightly cooler weather may have stopped it getting any worse.

Have fun, and watch out for the tourists in the troop carriers.

Thanks for the information Jim,

I have all the gear to go for mulloway and i have been trying to catch one for years now but haven't ever turned up the goods. I would like to catch one, doesn't matter what size really but bigger would be better, do you have any ideas for hooking up to one of these elusive fish?

No sorry.

I have never really had the time to target jewfish. And with my lovely wife 5months pregnant with our first child I can't see myself getting much more than the occasional fishing trip (read once a fortnight if I am lucky).

My father has caught a number of them though, all of beaches between Noosa and Marcoola. He normally focuses on a deep high tide gutter on the southern side of a headland. The high tide should be one or two hours after dark or before first light. Bait ranges from a big bunch of fresh beach worms to the good old pilchard.

Other than that I am afraid I cant help you much.

I've heard that they are around all year up there, but the best time is during the tailor run, Aug to Sept, around indian head. As said; the whole beach is good for general surf fishing.
