View Full Version : Friday AM Southport Seaway - Revenge

I spent all of Thursday telling uninterested friends, relatives, shop assistants, complete strangers that a GT had got the better of me in the Southport seaway early in the morning. By bedtime this disappointment had materialized into a solid plan for revenge. Alarm was set for 3.00 am and I was on the road again buy 3.15 am.

Same plan as usual but I dug out the heaviest rod I have - an old Wilson Snapper Barra 7ft - rated 2-5kg. I wandered down the Seaway rockwall stopping at a few points along the way, casting and retrieving a River to Sea gold coloured Popper with a darker back and underbelly about 10 cm long.

There were no hits for a couple of hours and the swell was massive by now. I found a good position about 20 meters from the end, perched on a flattish rock not far from the water. By 6.00 am I was getting soaked every now and then but I stuck my ground and about 10 mins later the lure is absolutely slammed close into the rocks in the foam. The heavier rod paid off and after a brief fight I had a decent Tailor safely up the rocks and in the keeper bag. My first this year - 52cm, 1.55 kg. I was very happy with it even if it wasn’t quite a GT. He will have to wait for another day.

I carried on for another hour or so but with no further hits so I gave up – can’t wait for the cooler weather!

Nice one. Nothing wrong with a bit of fresh tailor fillet that's for sure. I have never tried fishing with poppers but starting to think it is a good idea to try them especially off the rocks. Being restricted to landbased fishing seeing as I don't own a boat I am looking at refurbishing a Snyder Glas 11 foot rod which used to be my main rock fishing rig purely because of its action and reach. I seemed to get less snags with the longer rod off the rocks. May be asking for advice on fishing with poppers sometime soon.

Well done mate....tenacity pays!

Do you find the seaway fishes better on run-in or run-out tide? (Looks like you got your tailor right on high?)

The tailor are usually near the mouth of the seaway. The trevors seem to be back towards the pipline more. Have a look at some of the archived videos on nuggets website.

Nice to get some revenge tho. Tailor go hard.
