Went for an after work flick with Marty Z on Thursday night, we thought we would try some of our usual haunts and see if we could find some of the resident red terrors. Hit the water around 5.30 and Marty started throwing hard bodies (traitor;D) while I started with softies. The tide was due to turn just after 6.00 so we mucked around waiting for the run to start.

Marty opens the account with a Moses Perch (dropped at the boat), and then a small cod and then I got a small bream. Soon after the tide turned we started to see and hear the surface action we were waiting for. I decided to stick with the softies and work the deep water while Marty changed over to poppers, didn't take long for the first Big Eye Trevally to come to the boat, where yours truly made for a quick release when I stuffed up the net shot and knocked the fish off :-[:-[:D.

Another small trevor (GT) for Marty and it was time for a move, where Marty was straight back into the Big Eyes, hooking a nice 45cm model from behind a pontoon, some handy rod work (and a fantastic net shot :D) and it was boated. Bugger, maybe I should change over to poppers, I'll try a couple more casts and see what happens. Well what happened was a couple of touches on the 5" Gulp Jerkshad in Lime Tiger and a screaming run towards some pontoons, the little Tierra did its job well and the fish came up short and headed for open water, after the first run we had called it for a Jack, a good one, but now it went deep and through the rod tip we could see the big tail beats characteristic of a good trevally. After a couple of minutes I could see my leader and then a flash of bronze in the torchlight "Sh$t its a Jack", one more small run and its in the boat. Yippeee, my first legal of the season, 44cm - about bloody time. A couple of happy snaps and its back in the water to terrorise more bait fish and anglers.

With more and more surface action we start to realise that it could be a late night tonight - bugger works going to be tough tomorrow ::).

Marty is still hitting the surface and hooks up to what we called for either Tarpon or Giant Herring, whatever they are, they are hard to hook up and even harder to keep hooked, with their screaming runs, tail walks and jumps they are a lot of fun, it would have been nice to boat some.

Marty switches to crank baits and is rewarded with a couple of nice legal bream to 33cm, soon after he hooks up to what he thinks is another nice bream, which is in the boat in about 3 seconds where, under the light a nice 27cm Mangrove Jack is wondering what the hell just happened :o:o.

We call that a fitting end to the night and pull stumps at around midnight, with all fish released to fight another day.

Thanks for the session Marty, love tangling with those Jacks.

Cheers

John

Hi John well done. You sure you didn't have any ecstacy on board when you had that photo taken? Very very funny photo.

Great read JT. Both kept very busy too which is always great. Are you guys fishing rockwalls or manmade structures, ie pontoons. Seem to be doing well either way mate.

Glad you guys got some good fish, well done. Thats a happy looking man.

Do you use the jerk shads the same way as other Sps on the bottom, or are they more for mid water?

Im still keen for a bream lesson if you ever get around to it. No rush tho.

cheers

Cheers Guys,

No ecstacy required Franco, you know what an adrenalin rush Jacks can give 8-), and if it was ice I would probably be swimming around trying to catch them with my bare hands or sitting on the bottom holding a knife and fork waiting for one to swim by :drunk::wut::hammer::freak:. Got to love the "Deer in the headlights" night shots LOL

Andrew, I use the 5" plastic the same as if I was fishing for bream with small hops and twitches so it looks like a wounded bait fish, basically cast out and let it sink and work it like that all the way back to the boat. We'll still get together for a bream session - just need to get the Summer Series out of the way, third round is in two weeks.

Rich - we usually fish both rock walls and any man made structure available, anything where a fish can take advantage of the structure, be it to rest out of the current, grab a feed on other fish resting out of the current, or just to grab a bit of shade and or cover to ambush its food as it swims by.

Hey Greg, have a session tomorrow to try and find some new spots and fished the Ausbream social two weeks ago, landed a 1.70kg 3 fish bag which included a new PB of 980 grams. Won't change much as far as our game plan goes, we'll just go out and have fun and if we catch good fish that will be a bonus. Now that we have qualified for the grand final in November the pressure is off.

Hopefully see you at the next social, should be at the Casino in the middle of April after the Easter Bream Classic, I'll post up details soon.

Cheers

John
