Trying grinners;D for crab bait. Wonder what else they can be used for. Please keep it clean with your reply.

Caught two of the sods today off Wello. The trawlers had just been through and other than one good hit, only grinners;D were to be had.

Cheers

mate,
Put an 8/0 through him attached to about a metre of single strand wire under a balloon( about 6' ) or decent float. Deploy this rig on your 15kg outfit while carrying out your usual fishing. Have seen plenty of big Spanish taken in this way !!

Freeze them and give them to me for my winter night sessions and I will show you what you can do with them. One of the best baits around I reckon

I went into one of the Asian grocery stores in West End the other day and found a tin of fish with the brand name "Smiling Fish" and yes the fish used was GRINNERS!!! Had to buy it and give it a go but wish I hadn't, Dry little nuggets of grinner should be avoided.
Having caught hundreds of the bloody things I would say use them for Berley.

Cheers Dave.

i reckon they are fantastic sand crab bait and yes excellent on the spanish makeral as a livie under a balloon and i have caught some snodger snapper on fresh filletts in the bay , also good to take packs of thier frozen fillets on trips to places like turkey beach or 1770 for offshore reef fishing where they are very effective .
BUT I STILL HATE THEM.>:(

I love Grinners!

They make me tense up with expectation of that monster Snapper having a nibble at my soft plastic, but the fish of my dreams has been nibbling for quite some time, so I decide to check the plastic. I wind a little.... hey there's a little weight on the line!!:o But it must be tiny. My deckie calls it for a flattie, but another couple of cranks of the handle brings it closer to the boat. Buggar!!

Give me back my tackle I say!! Why did you have to swallow it so far down ya stupid fish!! Hold still!! Don't you know I am really trying to help??? Oh buggar, is that you?? what's that smell? My hands are covered in Sh%$#$!! Hold still ya buggar, every time I nearly have the hook out of ya gob, you wriggle, and now my flurocarbon trace needs to be replaced too!! You've got a hide smiling at me, I am really not in the mood to be gentle with you any more!!

Don't anyone post a pic of a grinner, I don't need reminding!!;D

I caught one of those yesterday and had no idea what it was. It got the live bait treatment, but somehow it's prey managed to steal it from my hook :(

Over west here we call them Lizardfish and they are in great demand as their easy to rig up as troll baits for Spaniards and Sailies,
when you pick 'em up you can feel how soft and pliable they are. Just got to sew their gobs up.

Can't anyone post a decent photo of the ugly buggers? Not that I tend to take snaps of them!
They've got teeth that demand a bit of respect. They're slimy and bony and ugly as buggery.
Couldn't stop catching them the other day on the 24's off the Gold Coast, ended up there after a trolling session at the top of the tide.
Bait jig or otherwise would just get them but not nuch else.
Easy 50cm specimens and I'd be interested how you rig the buggers as livies, I'd keep clear of the bitey end so maybe a shoulder pin??

Here is a pic... It isn't mine, I got it from another forum. I caught 4 of these the other day and they were all close to 40cm's... apparently they only grow to 35cm's but these may have been on roids!

Someone told me you can pickle them.

hhhmmm has anyone actually eaten one?? it may be one of those things that no one eats them because someone told me they are crap, maybe you should try one, who knows?? they may be good (may also be crap) but unless they are tried for sure, then it will always be a case of "Grinners, what to do with them!"

Does anybody know where they came from?? I cannot remember catching them in MB 20years ago.
Wondering if by now somebody might know where their natural range was 20years ago??? Would love to find out, we caught one 50cm long out the front of 1770, probably typical I dunno!
