Been there a couple of times. Reef is very close offshore - 5 miles or so. Do a search on this ste for Cooktown and you'll find lots of useful info. Remember, Cooktown is the wind capital of Qld.

Cooktown fishes pretty well, the reef is close as whiteman says and the S.E. trade wind blows for about 10 months of the year. The Annan River on the way into town fishes ok for Barra, Jacks, Fingermark, Trevs etc. The jetty in the main st on the Endeavor River fishes well on a run in tide in the morning( Mackeral, Jacks , Barra , Cuda's etc ) or at night, live herring and pike can be caught on the spot with a bait jig or throw chrome lures(keep your eyes open for the big gropers that steal your mackies etc). Better fishing is to be had if you drive north to places like the Starkey River but it is a fair trip. Archer Pt to the south of Cooktown is a good landbased spot with fringing reef around the headland, you can tangle with Trout, Cod and the usual pelagics !!

Was up there in May 06, and "BELIEVE ME" and the others, when they say it blows, it bloody well blows. Was there for three days and had three days of wind.
Asked when it may stop, and the response was
" Oh around December we may have a day or two with little wind"
Fished the Annan for around Five hours for one strike!
Couldn't get out to fish the rest of the time because of the wind and bloody rain.
The people could not be more friendly though, but the weather is far from the same.
There is a great Caravan Park opposite the Top Pub, not up on names, but because of the weather tourists are coming and going all the time. So you shouldn't have any problem getting in.
Great Place (People) shit weather.
Good Luck
