Found an Alvey esturary reel while diving on sunday.I have it sitting in freshwater at the moment. Is it worth cleaning it up?It has a bit of growth on it & was surprised when I got it it still spun around. Also still had fishing line on it.
Thanks Steve.

A bit of a soak in the brine won't hurt it. Just give it a strip, scrub and oil and it should come up fine

And even then, the scrub's only for cosmetic purposes ;)
Good luck,

I grew up using the old side-cast.I bought my first 6inch Alvie when I was 12.
I'm now 47 and I have 5 of them still as good as the day I bought them

Mate, it sounds like the one I lost. Just let me know where you were diving, what type of Alvey it is and I'll let you know if it's the one I lost.
After I confirm that it's mine, was wondering if you could drop it around to my place? As a reward, I'll tell you how I got my nickname.

Mate - Ditto - they seem to last forever.
Any chance of some before and after pics? Sounds interesting.
Cheers.

I reckon they've gone downhill since some of the brass and stainless parts have been replaced with plastic. Have a reel that's 20 odd years old no plastic and still works perfect, bought one of those 6.5" vented models with drag last year and have had a number of problems with the drag on/off lever, and ratchet switch. Have mates who have similar problems.

The drag set lever in Alveys is the hardest piece to design.
It used to be a cam and pushpin (stainless )assembly but this was subject to jamming if sand/salt got caught in the pin recess. Now they have a new design that i cant describe, sort of triangular cam in plastic.
If you think about it this mechanism has to have relatively fine tolerances, and still function if full of sand , or dunked in salt water ,or both. Not easy to do from a design point of view.
I have no affiliation with the Alvey company. However I do know and respect Bruce through a past career in advertising.
Cheers
