View Full Version : How Long is a Piece of Worm?

When using sand-worms for whiting bait, I usually put a bit on a size 4 bait-holder long-shank hook.
Some people say they do best with just a 1 cm long piece, others suggest a longer piece 3-4 cm, over the whole hook, and hanging off the end a little.
Personally, I can't help thinking that if I use a big bit 4-5 cm, that I might attract a decent bream or swallow tail, as well as a whiting.
Any ideas???

go chockas!
I mean make sure it still looks like a worm, and not a hook full of mud or somthing. But I reckon slip it on, slide it up until it can go no further, and then force a little more,. Snap it off so the barb is clear.
That's my theory,. but then I know guys that ctach more than me who use less too. Who knows?
cheers

run it along the shank, over the hook knot (especially if you don't have shank slices) and down the bottom leave a little tail passed the bend, but main thing is make sure the bend and barb are clear. Here's a dodgy pic.......

if you are low on worms use as shown in picture, but if you have plenty, use as much as you can jam on a hook, always had much more success on a fully loaded hook over a skimpy bit of worm.

Why have the barb out?
I don't see the point (NPI) of having the barb sticking out of a soft bait like worm.
As for how much, I have always been a fan of big bait = big fish.

I always have the barb out like Aussie Stu mentioned.....It certainly doesnt put fish off and you definetly increase your hook up rate.
A buried hook point will result in missed hook ups.

Mate it doesn't hurt to run the worm up the line a couple of mm's from where the hook is tied on , makes it harder for the fish to pick it off and they tend to swallow the bait.

Being the tight-arsed bugger that I am, I always used a small piece of worm on the bend of a long shank 4 with a small piece of red tube on the hook line and red wool wrapped around the shank of the hook. I used to do alright too, although I don't fish for 'em nowadays. You can dip your hook in a bottle of tuna oil and the wool will leach it out slowly. It's just a way of making those expensive worms go further.

I put on a fair bit and push it over the eye and up the line a couple of inches, then do a half hitch around the top of the worm.Looks very natural.
