Fished with good mate Damo this morning along redcliffe in ideal conditions with only a light breeze from the ne and a building tide , things were a bit patchy with only a few taps and bumps comming from the first few spots, lost a nice squire around 50cm at the boat and a few more under size squire and mixed species including a nice 50cm flatty .
the wind picked up at about 9.30 so we anchored up for a while and continued casting sps and were about to pack it in when the wind dropped and we decided to try a few more spots before stumps . with the wind dropping right out and the tide well and trully on the way out and no action to speak of i made the call and said "righto ten minutes at the last spot and thats it" , i downsized jighead to a #1 squidgie finnesse and put on a 2" nuclear chicken shrimp and nailed a small moses on the second retrieve then two casts later i had what i thought was another moses harrassing the gulp when i felt a little bit of weight and i struck with only a half hearted blow and my line started heading towards the boat , past the boat and kept on going and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz it realised it was hooked and off it went into shallower water (hooked in 14foot) after damo got his line in he turned the key and i regained some of the 60 meters or so of line that it pilfered on the first surge . after about five minutes and dropping the watersnake back into the drink to finnish the fight i said to Damo "if its a snapper its a bloody goodun" and he said "it's gotta be look at the head shakes" and then we had first glimpse of the fish and it was a thumper so i backed off the drag a bit more and it was soon netted first attempt .
YAAAH HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 73cm of pure adrenalin was on the deck and a solid hand shake and two pats on the back was in order, this is my best fish on light gear to date and it will be a long time before i forget it.
rod= 2-4kg penn proguide
reel= affinity 1000
braid= 6lb sufix performance
leader= 6lb sufix flurocarbon
thanx Damo for the great net shot and the mad scramble to get behind the wheel to stop me getting spooled ;)
cheers swano
