bought a beautiful timber alvery [i thing no markings ]but identical which has no ratchet wonderful many times being out on a reef beautiful peaceful scene quitely waiting for a strike and on a boat close by and off goes a ratshit racket and has our newbe hero caught a fish usually not just winding in to check the bait with the ratshit on why what is the human psychic behind this hay everyone look at me i've paid for the ratshit i'm going to use it regardless if i spoil the area tranquility and scare a lot of fish away too lazy to turn it off reel designers put the ratchet on the reel to able fishermen to here if they have a strike when not in sight of rod not to be mindlessly used to make a ratshit racket

My Okuma lever drag has a ratchet that can't be turned off, and I think it is louder when winding in than when a fish is taking line......

Yeah, yeah, xyz other brands don't do that :)

Personally I would take it out, I just couldn't handle it on all the time

The Rachet is only designed for one purpose...for when you have a rod out and want to know if something takes it...other than that it should be OFF!!

Nothing is more annoying than someone that leaves the rachet on all the time, even when I have it on when I bring in the line, the rachet goes off immediately!

A reel with a ratchet that cannot be turned off! are you sure?? if that is the case I can forget looking at Okuma reels if I want a new reel.

Wayneoro,

Try writing in sentences. Your posts are extreemly difficult to read.

I agree with your sentiments on ratchets.

A lot of 'newbies' leave the ratchet on whilst winding in and probably stems from fear that they will lose the fish if they take a fraction of a second to disengage the ratchet but I don't think that the noise would upset the fish seeing as they continue to bite when there is lots of anchor chucking and jet ski hooning going on all around the place most of the time but especially on weekends and that doesn't even take into account the noise of partying from tourists on houseboats and blaring music from them and gin palaces and boats rocking and rolling from the wakes from gin palaces and consequent swearing and champagne being poured in a loud and careless manner which is very upsetting if you have a hangover as well.:P

I got a daiwa that has a racket. Annoying when you reel in. But you can't turn it off.

I have yet to see a Daiwa that you cannot turn off the ratchet, are you sure it is not broken in some way, or maybe has a noisey "anti reverse"

I think some people are geting confused between the sound of spring loaded anti reverse dogs (as opposed to the silent friction types) and ratchets, for those that love the sound of a screaming ratchet try the new Pfleuger overheads with 'smart click',the spool sreams on the way out but is silent on the retrieve without dissengaging the ratchet.

yep, thats what I was thinking, anti reverse noise but anyone who can leave on the ratchet on a Penn International is bloody DEAF

Don't change for any bugger mate
oh yeah, I hate noise too.
Just give me the lapping sounds of the waves against the hull, a rod in one hand and a sausage sambo in the other and I'm good as gold 8-)
