Hi all;

Any All Black's supporters out there who could tell me what the fishing is like in NZ in April. I have a squillion frequent flyer miles that I need to burn so was thinking of taking the mrs over there for a week or so. Thinking about doing the touristy thing, but it would be a waste to go there and not wet a line. We plan on staying with some friends near Palmerston to start with, hire a car and go from there. I also plan on spending a day or so trying to get a crack at a big piece of venison, my bud knows the spot for that, so fingers crossed there.

Anyone have any hints on where to go fishing on the North Island?? Not interested in trout or freshwater, just 10kg+ snaps and those massive kingies you see in magazines. My mate has no idea about fishing so can't help. Is April a good month?? Any ideas where to start would be most appreciated. If April's not the month, can always make it another time, we are just thinking out loud at this stage.

Any info would be great.

Cheers,

Shane

Shane,

My mates old man runs a charter boat 'Pursuit' out of Whakatane in the bay of plenty. They usually take the boat north during april and work from the bay of islands, forget the name of the port. They do trips to the three kings (the group of islands) and I have seen Snapa, kingys and marlin. Awsome stuff. I have deckhanded for him (Rick Pullock) and only have good things to say about the whole opperation. I can send you a PM if you want his details. Summer is definitly better fishing over there, particularly for pelagics.

Matt.

Thanks for the info guys, I have been offline for a week or so. Matt, the details of the charter boat would be great if you could PM them please.

Sounds like April is the plan, might be my last chance for a holiday for a while so now just the issue of deciding whether to take a three year old bundle of energy or butter up the grannies for a week of toddler sitting....... best get his passport sorted me thinks.

Jpart, sorry mate, I think this year will be a year of two World Cups for Australia, a Broncos premiership, a Qld origin win and an unlikely Super 14 trophy for the Reds!!!!! What a year it will be :) Thanks for your input guys, much appreciated.

South of Palmy about an hour or so is Kapiti Island If you can get a boat out to Kapiti Island (poke your nose in at the boat club). Northern end you can jig for Kingies at the Boulder bank, bit further north again off Peka Peka (Line up the TV mast) you'll still find the snaps. Got monstered there this morning at change o light

Good luck.
