View Full Version : Buying Reels When Overseas
Gday ausfishers, just a query I hope others can help out with.
The pay mistress and I are heading off to Hawai around Easter for a bit of r & r and I was wondering if it is viable to purchase a couple of reels for myself when over there.
Can any one advise on the following???
. Is it much cheaper, takeing into account converting to the aussie dollar.
. Do reels come into the $900 duty free limit with customs. If so, how does this work, do I keep the receipt and present it when arriveing back in oz?
. Can any one recomend a good tackle store in Maui.
Im thinking of shimano and daiwa gear, havent nailed down the specifics yet, but a stradic is on the list, followed by something like a daiwa millionaire
All advice would be appreciated
cheers

if you are worried about the dollar amount just post them to your house just before you leave they will be there when you get home.

The Best bet.... Make sure you know the cost of the item you want up front before you travel. Make sure you know exactly what you want as well. Then, when you are looking, you can compare like for like, and $AU against $US and make a proper comparison.
Yes - the reels purchased would be part of the $900 duty free component.
My gut feeling is that you could mail order via the internet for the specific gear you want and it will be cheaper than buying in a tackle store in Hawaii.

Brian:
Hope you have a good time in Maui. Found it a real bore when I went there 18 months ago. Mainly due to weather.....
I was actually there on a golf holiday and was looking to pick up some cheap golf gear. Not too much savings when it came to the real good gear which from memory was the same with the fishing gear. Also there is not much shopping on Maui.
I actually ended up calling the shop I buy all my golf gear from here in Brisbane and he said he would match the price.
Also, be careful with Daiwa products because if you have a problem with it - Daiwa Australia wants nothing to do with you - mind you either does your local.

when u buy from america it is about 30% cheaper when u convert it over. when u order from america to australia about 25% goes on mailing it over so i think it is worth buying over there and bring it with your luggage. the duty free should make it even cheaper!!!!!!!!!1

If its a millionaire 7HT you want veals mail order in the Uk will sell them for £65 to uk residents i think you would save the 17.5% vat, when i have sent reels to AUS postage is £12 insured.

one 'trick" you can use is put some line on them, keep the goodies from the box, chuck the box away, and say you took them with you, and used them while you were there, have not done that myself but know someone who did, and seemed to work twice for him. but I am not one for buying over seas, better to give it to your local guy, who will look after you if something "goes amiss" unless it is a really huge saving of course, but a few dollars is not worth the hassle.
Cheers all,
starting to sound like a hassle, think I might just suck up the Pina Coladas instead and save my dollars for an aussie shop.
