Hooked a sunfish once off California, USA. Might as well have caught the bottom.

After 1/2 an hour retrieved about 20M of line and the fish decided to go back down the 20M, ended up cutting the line.

15-20 kg estury cod off noosa. very heavy to pull up with some short bursting runs, good fun. unfortunatly im not sure if the release would have been to good for it long way up then down for a fish to survive

A Sunfish OMG..... WOW... What an experience that must have been.
I see you got yours in USA. Are there many Sunfish in our water here?
Amazing stuff.

As the beasties can weight over a tonne, the fish decides when it is time to stop playing.

Seen a dead Sunfish washed up near Indian Head on Fraser Island. The Rangers and Marine Park collected it off the beach with a damn forklift and aprently was heading off to the musem or to be studied.

A few Whaler sharks had taken a bit of chunks from it. Interesting looking fish.

Deapsea, If you were to hook a passing truck, the results would be similar. I don't think the fish took much notice of me other then getting annoyed at the change in depth caused by my frantic attempt to retrieve my line.

Cheers

Hooked a whale when snapper fishing one night, didn't it play up when I put the gaf in (just kidding) Never did turn him though, 15lb line just doesn't cut it on a whale I guess.

Not my biggest fish but boat to fish ratio was a 19kg jew in my kayak a few months ago.

28kg GT off South Mole Island about 15 years ago. Took a live bream on a charter boat, I was the lucky bugger who put my hand up. OHH MY GOD what a fight!!!

Wouldn't ya know it though, my dads camera used to send a film black every now and then and guess what....

NO PHOTO's of the fish or the holiday!!!!!!!!!

But pound for pound was a 16-18lb barra when I was 4 or 5yo. Almost pulled me out of the boat in the East Alligator in the NT.

Wow a sunfish.. thats pretty amazing..

I have a photo in one of my books at home of a groper caught in the 70's in cape york that was 6ft4 inches long and 6ft in girth.. Massive fish would have to be over the 400 kilo mark, sad it got killed though...

Hooked a manta ray that would have been about 3 - 4 metres across. Was winding in at the time and it passed under the boat. My hookup lasted all of 5 seconds.

Had a couple of cobia over a metre long swimming with it and it made them look quite small.

Stark like you I hooked a Sunfish off the GoldCoast about 6 yrs ago.We thought it was a marlin and were backing down on it as it kept stripping of line. After 3hrs we saw it and I was devistated to find out it wasn't a marlin. If I'd known earlier I would not have continued the fight.Boy was I knackered. It was estimated to be between 250-300 kg

Well the heaviest fish I did battle with was an Amberjack which my uncle reckoned would have gone close to the 40kg mark before a shark took it and left me with a 10kg head. :o So the heaviest fish I can lay claim to would be a 15kg Tuna.

Enjoy reading the posts guys, hope to find myself fishing Australia in the near future. My biggest fish according to species would be a 45lb Cobia, 280lb Goliath Grouper, 130lb Tarpon, 25lb Snook, 22lb Redfish and a very nice 16lb Tripletail I caught last month running crab traps in the Gulf of Mexico. If someone could tell me how to post pics I'd love to share.

Dudrow, that 130lb Tarpon must have been an amazing fight. The biggest i have caught was only about 5lb, and they go off at that size on light gear. Was watching a vid the other day that had these guys chasing big tarpon around bridges in a boat somewhere in Florida. Awesome. Wish we got 'em that big over here.

have caught a few heavy fish, including a green turtle, hooked him at the blue hole off moreton and put up a dam good fight on 7kg spin outfit. my first cobia and barra would have to be the stand outs with the cobia going just over 30kg, and we didnt get an official weight for the barra but at 116cm long and with a gut that measured 92cm round it was a pig, had to have been over 15kg, pushing 20 maybe, quite a sight to see it breach the water.

Sorry Aussiefool, not to be rood or anything did you have a scale when you weighted that cobai. It doen't look 12kilos to me but maybe the photo is misleading.

Biggest fish is a 456kg tiger shark off sydney on 15kg line.
Heaviest yellowfin is a 44kg on 8kg, that fish took over 6hrs to boat.

My biggest so far is 120kg Black Marlin. Biggest ive seen caught on my boat is 160kg blue marlin. Hope to beat this this year!

Did hook another boat that crossed our lures one day a few years ago! He was doing about 30 knots at the time so the tiagra really screamed. Never landed it!

My best....307kg tiger shark on 15kg. GoldCoast,March 1991.

The biggest critter I ever hooked was a 10ft pilot whale or false killer whale,im
not sure which, they look the same in the heat of battle

A mate and I were trolling for blue marlin in 150 fathoms of Tweed Heads when we hooked a couple of 15kg yellowfin tuna, during the fight something grabbed my fish and started taking line slowly, after a while I gained some line and looked over the side of the boat into the clear water only to see this huge dark shape 20ft below. At first I thought it was a shark but it surfaced soon after with my lure[lumo pakula spocket] and a mangled tuna in its mouth. While the whale was on the surface my buddy and I cruised over and grabbed the 400lb jinkai leader that was completely clear of the water. As we wrestled with the whale trying to get him to give up my yellowfin, several other whales surfaced nearby, luckily I got my lure back and the pod of whales dissapeared below the surface. When I think back the only reason it grabbed the tuna is because we had a multiple hookup with 3 24kg outfits screaming of together while we fought 2 fish the other was there for the taking,so the whale made his move.... Its certainly a strange story but believe me, its true.

i hooked an average size bream from my tinny in a small bay a few months back and a shark chased it when i was reeling it in. I had him on the line for about 5 minutes until he let go just before getting to the surface. When i brought the bream up it was torn to shreads and there was blood and guts all around the boat
the shark would have been a good 2 or 3 meters

What did he taste like? :P

I have caught a 12'4" Bronze Whaler once, but that was using 10mm rope tied off to a cleat on a fishing trawler. Used 3 stingrays on the hook as bait. It could have been a good fight if I hadn't secured the rope at the last second. The rope went "Twang" about a millisecond after I got it secured.

That was a bit exciting. :o

<Thinks about barefoot waterskiing behind enraged Bronze Whaler>

One of the other deckhands on the same trawler had a smallish shark on the end of a handline once. As the shark was taking line, a loop of line caught on the end of his thumb.

The shark kept going and the flesh just popped off the end of his thumb, leaving the bone hanging out.

He had a helicopter trip to hospital courtesy of the shark.
